LT77 carnage – warning, content unsuitable for the faint hearted

Hell no, new oil already in. It's not making any noises, shifts great, I gave up fixing things that are not broke, it has to keep going until it quits on the road like yours or protests loudly enough for me to worry about it.

In my LT77 I used the the latest manual gear oil that Citroen used.
It was a 75 multigrade oil with additives added to improve gear selection.
Viscosity looked to be on par with a 20/50 engine oil.
Had no problems with it but that was a little while ago and I suspect better oils are available now.
PS also used it in 3500S manual boxes.
Seemed to improve the gear selection.

Hi Clive
For years I have used Mobil 1 0w-40 full synthetic with Moly in an LT77 as recommended by a gearbox rebuilder. I decided on the Syntrans this time to try it.

Mark,
"My LT77 oil pump seems to be working OK, it is pumping the iron filings around very nicely " - how long since the last time you had the plug out, and presumably cleaned it?

Not unreasonable if the box is behaving OK. I would check it again in a few 1000 mi - if its got negligible debris on it you are probably OK. The TR8 box I just acquired looks like its been opened - red silicon oozed out of the joint faces - has a clean drain plug, and feels very tight, so I am going to chance using it without looking inside. AFAIK only the 4wd boxes used a filter for the oil pump in the extension case. Now that you know where the pump test port is you can check it works ! Some Landy forums recommend annual oil changes for the LT77.

The box will stay in until it quits. I won't be losing sleep over it either. As you say regular oil changes are a sensible measure.

It has done 2017 season, 2018 season, 2019 season, so say around 7500 miles to get that furry on the plug.
Perhaps we could initiate an annual LT77 furriest plug competition at the end of every season, the winner getting a couple of litres of gear oil and a pair of Nitrile gloves !

Thanks for the lube recommendations chaps. I'll report back once I've heard from the transmission rebuilders as to what fluid they suggest using.

As it is LT77 season I took the Cobra to a meet this morning, upon returning home changed the oil.

The camera just would not focus sorry.
Much less on this magnet.

A clean magnet for info and comparison.

I bought Sparky with a fully rebuilt LT77, and I changed the oil after a few hundred miles.

Yes, so basically these boxes make iron filings and keeping the oil changed regularly is going to help. If as some are saying changing the oil the same time as the engine oil is to be considered a good regime then its going to get bloody expensive. I think a cheaper bulk buy trans oil may have to be found.

Does the gearbox sump plug always have a magnet, or are these special faaaancy aftermarket sump plugs you guys are using? In my defence, I've only previously owned automatics. What causes the iron filings? Are they really little shards broken off the teeth of the gears!? Crikey!

I believe they are a standard fitment.

When I stripped my gearbox I checked every item in detail, every bearing, every gear, every shaft, slider, everything. The only part of the box showing any sign of wear was the reverse gear, and the associate gear on the layshaft. So I assumed all of the metal filings come from there. Probably comes from crashing it into reverse :)
