linkages

Hi there can someone tell me why there are three linkage rods on the auto trans in my 73 3500?
I can see one, that moves, thru the hole in the trans tunnel, and one next to it but doesnt seem to move at all?
I looked in the manual and it seems there a third? on the other side?
Thanks

well looks like there is only two rods/linkages and one it attached to the alloy housing of the gearshift mechanism, but looks like its doesnt do anything?
Must be there for a reason?

oh dear there is a bolt sitting in the gearbox bracket/well. I wonder where its supposed to live?
oh well i might pull the heater out now, what am i doing?
We are probably moving soon to a new house, I may have to trailer it there.
Well ill be well versed in it i guess as my series one was moved that way twice!

I have found that the bolt sitting all alone was "lost" when the coupling to the trans flange and driveshaft was being put back together.
So all good but will a shorter bolt be detrimental to the operation of the coupling, like off balance? It is only 5mm or there abouts shorter.
The gear lever was loose or at least it rocked from side to side and turned out the rubber bush wasnt broken but just worn/soft so i inserted a thin plastic
ring around the outside and clamped it down in position. Itll do a fine job till it needs replacing(hopefully after i have long gone)
The mechanism above the box is very stiff so looks like ill need to clean and lube that.
Tomorrows job now

I have found that the second linkage is called a tie rod and this doesnt move when changing gears but alters what when adjusted?
What is its purpose ?

It locates the compensator in a fixed position relative to the base unit, so that in the event that the engine/gearbox unit was to move on its mountings it wouldn't pull it in or out of gear.

oh that does make sense
Thanks Harvey
i have found that disconnecting the linkages to the box and the shift lever, the compensator mech. is very tight and think it could be dismantled and cleaned and then lubed upon reassembly.
So i have undone the nut (loose anyway) and tried to pull apart but doesnt want to budge.
Shall have a look at the manual but is there something im missing? I thought (haha) it would fall apart. Not much room but im sure ill cope.

Hi, Ahh yes the compensator, TBH it will be easier to drop the back of the box down and reaching over the top of the box take the compensator off of the bell housing (3 bolts) disconnect the rods and sort the problem on the bench, it will probably be the steel shaft running through the nylon slider. It will just want a bit of tlc and clean up and an appropriate lubrication.

oh dear more work
thought id get away with it in situ.
I tried and tried ,but it wouldnt seperate so gave up.
Ill have a look tomorrow some time and see if i can remove the whole thing.
