Kienzle clocks

I'm trying to find where a 2.5" bezel diameter clock I've got has come from. It's the same mounting and came in a black plastic tube like fitted to the P6 and I'm given to understand P5 and P4s.

I does look like what I think are the earlier P6 clocks (with bullet connectors on flying leads), but it's a much earlier model, all metal inside, and had red hands. Also the original bezel looks to be like the Kienzle MotorMeter clocks I'm told were in the P4, but it just said Kienzle on the front (in bigger letters than the P6 clocks). I can't swear that the hands hadn't been painted or swapped from another because there was no glass when I got it.

You might wonder why I'd bother fixing such a clunker - it was as bad inside and some had stuck something up the backlight hole to bend the balance wheel. But for straightening that and a good clean and lube, it ran (the solenoid was week and I replaced it, but I've fixed that too and may put it back to original). Not only ran, but kept pretty good time. So, given that and the suffering it's obviously gone through, I thought I'd have a go.

I'm likely to have another go at painting the hands and I'm looking for a more original bezel, but it does runs well - nearly 3 mins between the electric winder going clunk.

Well it's okay considering it started from a very low point. Even lower than shown, cos when I cleaned the face a bit, it was like this under the crap:

The hard bit was finding out how to get the blummin hands off to swap the dial face - the Triumph ones I started all this with (when the hands fell off the one in my 73 Sprint) are easy; as are the late P6 clocks. But these are pressed on well tight.

But a lot was simple luck in that I had broken one with near enough the right face, and another I could swap bezels with.

But I still don't know what car it's out of.

Now I've got two P4 clocks of the MotoMeter variety - though only one may ever run again. The problem is that, in neither case, can I tell what colour the hands were originally. They are, now, the sort of crusty grey-brown colour - I thought they were zinc-aluminium alloy, like the later ones, but I now think they are steel and rusty.

So, does anybody know if they all had red hands or some were white? If there's a mix, what's like to be the most wanted?

Hi, This has mildly peaked my interest, so I googled 'Kienzle car clock red hands' the main contender is for Ford Mk1 Escort and Capri and Lotus Cortina.

Kienzle Clock Ford Capri Mk1 Rs Gt Escort Lotus Cortina In Vgc Working • £103.13

There were some P4 clocks but they had 'motometer' on the escutcheon as well.

But who knows how many clocks were moved around over the past 50 odd years. I know if I had a clock that didn't work I just went and got one out of another car, I didn't get them repaired, far cheaper and easier.

I don't know fords that well, but from what I can find, the Mk1 Escort and Mk2 Cortina had the other mounting mechanism, which used 3 spring-clips up the side of the body and a plastic ring that slipped on from the back once the clock was through the hole. DSCF5575.JPG
This is a side view of a model 8014 for a de-chromed Mk1 RS/Mexico. There was also the similar model 8013 for the cars with chrome bezels like the 1600E, and an 8011 model for ones with black and chrome bezels. It's the same mount as used on Triumphs, Daimlers, and Jaguars.

There's a hint, here and there, that the Mk1 Cortina and early Capris had the single lug behind 12 mount, like the Rovers. But the Ford forums I've asked on haven't been much help.

I'm trying to ask people who know, because people selling stuff will say owt. For e.g., I've seen several listing Ford clocks like the above, which light-up blue, as S3 E-Type ones, which light-up green. I've marked a couple of listings like that on the E-type owners forum (cos if you message the seller, they don't change anything).

Still doing a bit repairing these Kienzle clocks that fit Rover P4 - P6.
Now I'm trying to find out what I can about the changeover between ones with 4.7mm Lucas bullet connectors on flying leads and ones with a 3/16th earth and 1/4" Lucas spade on the back of the case.
Also, which ones had chrome front bezels and which had black ones - I've seen both types of electrical connector on both types of bezel.
I'm also interested if anyone has any info on the changeover between the clocks with two screws in the face to ones with none - Kienzle seem to have changed the backlight shroud just behind the glass at more or less the same time; later ones have a flat black ring close up behind the glass.
