Jag Diff Weight

Hi,
Does anybody know the weight of a 4ha Salisbury Jag diff?
I'm trying to get one posted from up north down to me in Sussex and have over estimated 75kgs but I'd like to know what it really is.
I have lifted one before and it's certainly not a legal one man lift.
Surprisingly very hard to find info on this

Is it open or LSD, and does it have calipers or not?

I have a spare open diff in pieces spread about the place, I think I could gather the bits into a pile and put them on the scales. I have a feeling it probably would need to go on a small pallet, I don't like lifting them, let alone sending a courier to lift it!

Simon, it's your friend Bob's diff
It's non LSD, just the bare diff I believe..
I've got pallet quotes for around £50, some couriers can do it for more like £30 but I need to give them accurate information.
Shiply and anyvan have quoted joke prices ranging from £250  to the lowest so far of £90..
Alternatively of course if anyone is planning a trip in the near future from Nottinghamshire to Sussex they could make a little money :D

I do remember you were looking at acquiring Bob's spare diff, if you get a chance, look up the way they are mounted in the TVR, may give some helpful pointers :)

I'll see what I can do digging out and weighing a bare open diff, they are really heavy on their own, I think a little less than the weight of an LT77! I did courier an LT77 a few years back, can't remember how much it was but I strapped it to a small pallet which was relatively cheap from memory.

I dug out the Jag diff bits I could find and roughly put it all together, open diff, dry and missing some bolts/bearings, no discs/calipers, comes in at a little under 50kg so properly assembled with some oil I'd guess it would be about the 50kg mark.

While I was at it I dragged my old V8 diff and weighed that for a comparison, as removed so probably still got oil inside, but brakes removed comes in at about 45kg.

I don't know how accurate my scales are, they were cheap and go quite high!

Not quite so much of a difference as I expected, but with the addition of a LSD, the extra mounting/support brackets and extended propshaft the weight does start to creep upwards.

That is beyond helpful Simon, thank you once again :D
It confirms my overestimate was indeed over

Once strapped to a pallet it would be a bit closer to your estimate, better to be a little over than under and risk losing it somewhere!

It was a push I needed, once I get some fresh stock of steel I think I may look at making a better lighter-weight conversion for mine now I've got my spare diff back in the garage, and then get on with some of the planned improvements/refinements 8)

Glad it's spurred you into action :D
I'd be interested in the changes to the diff mount you decide, we're doing one at the moment for one of our customers. I say we, but it's Duncan's fabrication work..
I found this company who are very reasonable for heavy parts compared to everywhere else I've tried (shiply and anyvan included- best quote from either has been £91, and upto £250  )

Their packaging guidelines suggest it could be bubble wrapped and covered in cardboard, rather than palleted..
50kg next day delivered would be £35 :)

It's not like I haven't got enough projects on the go at once, work and home!

My basic plan is to tidy up the installation, taking some inspiration from the TVR Tasmin series cars and how they had the differential mounted in the chassis. I'm more than happy with the lower mounting structure I have, just the upper mount is a little untidy and not in keeping with the rest of the car. Making the videos I did earlier in the year have highlighted where I need to concentrate on bracing the diff a little more, still contemplating how to do it, and what other work I'll do at the same time.

Here's a website with a few good pictures of TVR's method of holding the diff in place:

I would budget for 55kg if just wrapped in cardboard and bubblewrap, but £35 next day is really good value. I still wouldn't recommend trying to lift it, my back still aches from getting it out into my garage :?
