Hello Mark,
the usual test for worn out clutch is to accelerate up a hill in high gear (4th) and see/feel/hear if the clutch slips - If it does it's worn out and needs replacing.
Difficulty selecting first, from rest, could be due to a number of things - Hydraulics need bleeding, friction disc sticking on splines to name but two.
However, I have always had auto Rovers (after a few manual cars - not Rovers) so hopefully someone with experience of Rover clutches will offer some advice also.
Regards, John.

Dificulty selecting gears, is usually down to hydraulic problems, and then most likely the slave cylinder.

As suggested, try bleeding first, preferably pump plenty of fluid through so your sure its on fresh fluid. Whilst down by the slave cylinder, check for leaks, its common for the piston seal to perish or the cylinder bore to corrode and allow fluid past, hence clutch release problems.

New cylinders are available but are quite expensive, the cheaper (and normally successfull) way is to buy a new seal kit (around £10) and "hone" the cylinder using either a hone tool or some fine wet and dry paper, to help the new seals.

I have personally also had trouble with the master cylinder, and infact the last time I had trouble I replaced master and slave plus the hose as a complete set from another car, this solved my problems.

Richard
