identifying the water temp guage sender

Hi there,
My water temp gauge is not working and I need to identify the sender on the engine block.
In the center of the block are two possible senders, one on the very top and another to the left of the top hose inlet to the block , lower down on the front.
Which one is the temp gauge sender to test and replace if a dud?

So the one on the top measures the temperature of the water and interprets the heat needed to control the carburetor bi metallic strip sensor?

Nothing so sophisticated Peter. It consists of a bowl filled with wax that melts as the coolant temp increases. This facilitates the closure of a switch within, that allows the orange choke warning light to illuminate. All it does is to provide a reminder that the choke is still out, nothing more. There is no correlation between when the light comes on and running temperature.

With regards to the coolant temperature sensor, make sure you obtain one for a P6B. You may well find that those for the SD1 or Range Rovers etc. won't precipitate the correct position on the gauge.

Ron.
