identifying carburetors on V8 engines.

Hi Peter,

There were only two basic types fitted, the HS6 and HIF6. Are you looking to buy a pair for your engine?

Ron.

I managed to get a pair of HIF6 off ebay for £80 with manifold. Needed a bit of a clean but are working.

Hi Peter,

In Australia, possibly quite a bit of money. Have you spoken to Midel about having your carburettors refurbished?

Sorry didn't look to see your location. I also bought rebuild kits for my original carbs but did something wrong when I rebuilt them. SU kits are still available from multiple sources here in the UK. I am not sure about carriage cost but they are around £40 per carb. Hope this is a little more help. Burlens are very helpful.

The RCCA visited Wilson Carb. in Melbourne who apparently do good work and a couple of the guys I spoke to who had gone on the tour were very impressed.
May be worth trying them if there is no-one suitable near the coat hanger.

I have emailed them for a quote on reconditioning them!

They replied today with $350/365 depending on what has to be done....each....a months pension on carbies...yikes..
Peter
Perhaps dropping them into a bucket of diesel for a week would cure everything, then a pressure wash in a cleansing ale, Guinness of course.

Suspect you could get NOS for that. Try Wilson's. Or better still, check with your Sydney Rover club, I'd be surprised if the Flynn parts auction didn't include carbs and I believe that the various clubs were stocking up with parts.

They would be as good as new if you decided to go with them, and probably look better, as they bead blast the bodies and polish the dashpots to a mirror finish.

Usually, all that is necessary in overhauling an SU ( and I am talking HIF6 here ) is a new seal kit, and possibly floats if they have started to take up fuel. Seals can make a massive difference, turning an engine that won't idle properly, runs rough etc into one that you could balance a pencil on.

Yesterday I removed the HIF6 carburetors and sent them to Midel in Sydney,( Lakemba), they will asses them and let me know what has to be done and the cost $..
I finally had to take this move because the car finally would not start, only a cough. you would think that with 8 cylinders at least one would fire. Fitting the electronic module and new fuel pump made
no difference. Good spark and fuel at the carbies, but no go..
When they return, I expect to start the car more easily than before! fingers crossed and HB in hand. :)

Just to restart this thread, Butterfingers was the price you quoted for both carbs or each?

Have you got them back and fitted?

I was quoted $750 for both carbs and they came back on Friday and the final charge was $723.58 inc postage and GST.
They have lost the tags that were on the carbs too , but the overall finish is excellent.

Thanks Peter
Had vague thoughts of having mine from the original engine done they've not been used for 37 years and current ones seem fine so it's a lot for no real reason. Think I'll wait till they need doing
