HS 8 SU Carbs refurb.

Hi I am looking for some help and advice.I have a1968 Rover 2000 tc which has twin HS 8 carburettors.Due to running problems I recently got someone out to have a look at them and the diagnosis was that the front carburettor would not adjust at all.He balanced them as well as he could and the car runs ok if a little thirsty.I have decided to go for a refurb but I am experiencing difficulty getting a refurb kit.I have tried Burlens who say that they do not do a kit but sell stuff individually but most of the items are out of stock. Also tried a couple of our favourite suppliers but unfortunately I haven't managed to get a response.Any help appreciated.

I've recently been through a similar process with my HS8-equipped TC. Why wouldn't the front carb adjust? Has the jet-lowering mechanism, actuated by both the choke cable and the mixture adjustment screw, seized up? That should be fairly easy to free off. I got new needles, jet assemblies and gaskets from Burlen a few weeks ago, which are the items most likely to need replacement. The needle valves had already been replaced on my carbs but are common to other SUs, I think. Return springs for the jet-lowering mechanism and the choke-actuator spindle were also available from Burlen at that time. I didn't need to replace spindles and bushes, but if Burlen doesn't have them you could try another specialist such as Gower & Lee, Southern Carburettors or the Carburettor Exchange in Leighton Buzzard. I've just looked on the JR Wadhams website and found that they have HS8 rebuild kits, but the needle has to be bought separately.

Hope that helps.

Thanks very much John.Appreciate that.Dont really know what was wrong but I think I will have to get some assistance with the required parts when the mechanic removes the carbs.
Thanks again
Tony.

As an quick test on the carbs, I would suggest you test the spindle bushes for sealing. with the engine running, spray a little starting fluid or brake cleaner onto the area where the spindle enters the carb body. If the idle stumbles or increases it indicates a worn spindle and/or bearing wear. This can make it impossible to tune and can make for very rich idle and lean at load conditions. The spindle bushes (2x per carb p/n AUD 3080) and spindle (1x per carb p/n WZX 1318) are available from Burlens here. On cars our age I would first suspect this as they are a wear item. As others have said, you can get the jet, float valve and needle from them also. With the exception of the spindle bushes its all very simple to do. Even the bushes are doable if you do a bit of searching for youtube videos and read up on things.

Just ordered and fitted a full kit MGBD PARTS HOLD THEM ALL IN STOCK

It is still in bits. Full strip and refurb project.
In saying that, I did the same many years ago on my 1972 TC, and it was as sweet as a nut. Well balanced, economical and required no adjustment for many years.

removed large amounts of dirt from the cams and linkage so all adjustment screws are mating on very clean surfaces, which eliminates any propensity to re-adjust.

Thanks everyone.Carburettors now refurbished and refitted.Much better than it was but still has slight backfire.Diagnosed as faulty distributor.Have just got a new distributor with electronic ignition from Simon BBC.Fingers crossed this will sort it.
