Hey guys,

Does anyone know how to take off a 2000 P6 instrument panel. I got as far as pulling out the clock and rev counter pod, and pulling the cover off the instrument lights to expose two main screws. But the whole panel only comes out about half and inch?? Do I need to reach in through the bottom and pull the speedo cable out or something??

Regards

Yes. The speedo cable should have a long plastic extension so it is fairly easy to reach and unscrew from inside the glovebox. Once that is out of the way you should be able to pull the speedo forwards and then start disconnecting wires.

I tackled this job recently when I replaced my panel light rheostat. Take some time to get a good look at where the speedo extension goes up from beneath. There are a couple of holes here. When you replace the speedo cable, if you get the wrong hole reinstallation can be a bother. Mine was installed improperly by the previous owner. Speedo cable in wrong hole so left main screw in place but could not be tightened, and instrument panel off center.
The top cover comes off easily with 4 nuts to be removed, and gives you some room to look behind the instrument panel. I recommend taking this off. makes removal and installation much easier. If I get a chance later today, I'll post a pic of the underside of the dash so you can see where the nuts are located. You will also have to remove the A post covers - 2 screws each side , and a screw at the corners of the top cover.

I agree about removing the dash cover as it's not hard & makes things a lot easier. After removal of the pillar-trims you only need to loosen the four small nuts off, not remove them completely then pull the cover towards you.

OK, as promised, here are some pics of the underside of the top cover and the 4 bolts that need to be loosened.

On my car one of the side bolts was located behind the instrument panel and no nut was on the bolt.

Perhaps the factory simply missed out the one above the speedo. The same dash top does both left and right hand drive with the strip speedo, so the actual top would need to have provision for all 4. It would be interesting to compare with the (sided) round dial type.

No, there was/is a nut on mine & I don't think Rover would have 'missed out' such a vital component, no matter how awkward it was to get to.
Above all, they were Rover.

I'm not sure about that as it's not really awkward to get to with a small spanner once you've located it. The awkward bit is not damaging the black-faced foam strip as you poke the spanner through, which after all these years has got fairly brittle & easily damaged. I don't suppose it's that difficult to fabricate a new one if needed but you'd have to think of something flexible to replicate the matt-black face of the foam that you see.
I'm not sure if glued-on cloth would look right, maybe if the weave was small enough.
Someone will experiment I'm sure.
