Hot fuel pump

I’ve got a problem with my mechanical pump getting hot when idling in traffic ect .... when this happens the filter is empty and the carb bowls very low more so the offside carb , if I cool the pump by pouring water onto it it will start and run fine.I see vapour lock issues have been done to death so apologies .... my cooling system is clear timing correct and carbs have been rebuilt and tuned ( running a touch rich) I have rebuilt the pump as it took an age to start when left for a few days .... I’ve never had it happen before but I don’t know that last time it was sat in hot traffic ? I’ve removed the pump to make sure I haven’t cocked up anything and all is well.ive ordered some lagging to put over the fuel pipes to the pump but it hasn’t arrived yet.I even tried making a heat shield for the pump but didn’t make any difference .... the pump is very hot to the touch but the pipes don’t seem to be ... has anyone found a solution to keep the pump cool? Many thanks

You can fit an electric pump in the line to pump fuel through when it vapourizes, or as you're suggesting, fit heat resistant lagging to the pipes. The pump will always get hot because it's bolted directly to the engine.

FYI the heat resistant lagging can be of varying quality, so if you want some of the good stuff I can put you in touch with someone, but it don't come cheap.

Thanks for reply Harvey ..... I wonder if a non heat conductive spacer would help .... I’ve ordered the lagging from a race car building company ( supposed) so I’ll see how it goes .... if it’s no good I’ll give you a shout

A heat resistant spacer would be great, if it didn't move the pump away from the cam, and so give you the same problem for a different reason.

Yea I’m just toying with ideas ....... but ultimately it looks like an electric pump .... which I don’t really want to do

It’s this stuff .... a lad from work recommended them (jap car nut) sent me the link , he said they are race car folk ..... but looking at their website it looks like they just sell trick bits for Hondas and stuff ..... I’ll see what turns up wether it’s any good is an other matter
Exo racing is the website 23598D2A-4A6D-44B7-9204-3133FB6F75AE.png

That looks very much like the type of thing my mate manufactures and sells. It will be interesting to see if you buy it whether that firm have manufactured it, or just bought it in to sell on.
