Holley 390 Carbs - Ditching the SU's

A friend of mine has bought a Holley 390 carb and all the gubings to replace the standard SU's on his Series 2 V8.Everything has been pretty much straight forward but i was wondering if anyone has done this to their cars.We are trying to come up with idea of replacing the accelarator linkages with a cable system to remove the problem of play in the original linkages.Any ideas of how to fasten the cable to the accelerator would be great.
Thanks John ???

I brifly swapped my SUs for a 390 Holley on an Edelbrock Performer manifold a couple of summers ago. The four barrel carb had distinctly quicker throttle response and it really changed the character of my '73 3500 automatic. However the accelerator pump gasket perished and leaked fuel all over the top of the manifold, when I sorted that out it became apparent that the jets were too large, but only when all the unburnt fuel in the first exhaust box exploded! I re-used bits of the SU linkage and made up a bracket, wasn't too hard. I've reverted to the SUs and the Holley is awaiting a strip and rebuild. I'd be grateful for any information about which jets to use for a 3.5litre V8 with a Kent 214 cam and standard heads/exhaust. I'd caution against using an Edelbrock 'triangular' air filter with the foam element, it catches fire if you get a back-fire and melts. I also had to remove the under-bonnet soundproofing to then fit a low profile 'pancake' style 10" filter.
Any tuning tips very welcome!

hi, converted my 3500s to lpg with a specific lpg only gas mixer [see photos page] and i used a cable which goes on the original lever / rod system [cable has ball on end to lock /locate] using a mounting bracket off the bell housing to lock outer cable in place this then runs down under the motor and to the front of the car to the front of the rocker box where i have made a simple bracket that the outer cable stops on. hope that makes sense???? you could probably replace the throttle pedal and use a cable which locks on the bulckhead, most hot rods and kit cars etc use aftermarket pedals are are relatively straight forward to swap i.e bolt to floor or hinge of bulkhead.

Thanks Rovermat. We've done the linkage as you described(works perfectly),there is no throttle play and i can just say the Holley's do make a huge difference in driveability, easier throttle control, not that it was bad in the first place!.But i don't think i will be doing it to my 2 because i don't think the cost of all the new parts is worth the trouble.Looks great though!I'll post some pictures when i get chance to

John

I think RPI can supply the Weber 500 carb with all the correct linkages as appropriate to the application, including the P6.

Peter,

I can confirm the RPI Weber 500 offering, they even do a special linkage to the P6 throttle cable. I did consider this for my P6 and made a few enquiries with the good chaps at RPI but I have a few more pressing matters to do first.

Great website... http://www.rpiv8.com
