Hi All,

Let me buy you a virtual beer .

I've just got back into P6B ownership after 45 years! I first had one in 1975 when everyone was offloading gas guzzlers after the oil crisis. I was 21 , single bloke in the Navy and and loving life! Sadly had to get sensible and buy a house so the Rover went for a Fiesta, launched in 1977. My P6 was a white one with black top, and when driving in uniform I was often mistaken for a cop - very useful as peeps would pull over .

Anyhoo, bought a 3500S last week (probably paid more than I should have ), after looking round for some time - there is a lot of rubbish out there! This one has seen a fairly comprehensive restoration/update from the last but one owner, documented in the P6 Owners Club News last June. The car is Monza Red and was called the Guvn'r. Not sure that I'll name it unless my granddaughter insists....

There are still a few issues to sort out, some well documented on this site - duff clock, wiper delay etc. I've been lurking on the site for a while, and realise that there's a wealth of knowledge and experience here. The two major issues are brakes (especially non-existent servo), and 89k mile gearbox which only allows me to select gears on a random basis. I've found a firm called the Gearbox Centre, who have assured me that they will be able to recondition the box, albeit for a price into 4 figures. They seem to know their stuff, they can repair internal (no longer available) components by hard facing and regrinding to size, so will likely give them a go.

On the plus side, the engine has had a top end overhaul and is peachy. Usual leak from the rear crankcase seal, but it looks like the flame traps are ancient and hoses are perished, so renewing those may help. I think it's an engine (#48106844C) that has the later seal so may be able to attend to that when the box is out. Paintwork is very good and structural rot largely sorted. Interior is also very good.

I'll be looking more at the techy bits of the site and try not to ask questions without searching first. One motorbike forum kills a polar bear cub every time someone fails to use the search....

In the meantime some Rover porn:

Hi Kwacka, looks like a nice car

there is a lot of rubbish out there!

There is no rubbish, just different levels of challenge :)

Ask away, we're all happy to help. Most of the Megasquirt forums are like that, telling me that it's an RTFM fault  which is very helpful - NOT

What's the Kwacka? Pic please :)

Welcome
Please chat with Harvey on here regarding gear selection, it may be a simple fix.
Nice looking motor.

It was a KLE 500 long time ago, now have a Tiger Explorer (SV was my sons), and R12RS. Ignore the wrinkly old man, he was just passing by ;).How about you?

Thanks cobraboy, tbh there's a bit more, it jumps out of reverse, noisy in 2nd and a bit rattly all round. 3rd is near impossible from 4th, even double declutching. I will talk to Harvey but I think I'll have to bite the bullet at some point, it's taking away a lot of driving pleasure atm.

Nice, it's surprising how much the early Japanese bikes are now fetching. I remember seeing my first CB750 next to a Triumph Thunderbird 650 and being blown away. I also remember the first Honda dealer in Leicester, Ken Ives - everyone thought he (and the bikes), wouldn't last 5 minutes.....
Another fine example of British bike manufacturing management, along with cars, lorries, ships etc . Whoops, slipped into Victor Meldrew mode, sorry about that it won't happen again .

Nice car, you need look at your front engine mounts probably a good time to look at the rear one as well.

Welcome

Thanks Graeme, I'm still trying to compile a 'to do' list, and am in touch with the last but one owner who did a lot of work on the car, they may have been done. If not I'll probably get them done when the gearbox is removed. Is there any particular reason you have said that - based on mileage?

Your under bonnet photo shows a lean to the left caused by the direction of torque on failed or failing rubbers, left and right will both be in a similar state plus often the rear mount causes problems as the box slides from side to side either with noise but who knows in the case of a manual box could be a contributor to your gear change issues.
