Evening all. Best introduce myself then, Dom here and I live right at the top end of Warwickshire.

So I had 2 Rover P6 cars back in my yoof, a 4 cylinder and then a V8. I recall some things even though it was 35 years ago, mostly the comfort was sublime and that both were rather needy mistresses.

Anyway, I’m looking to get back in the saddle with a nice P6 to use as my daily. I joined a FB group so guess quite a few of you are on here too.

Originality isn’t my thing, I certainly don’t want to go back to junk like points and condensers so there will be updates along the way. It will probably be a V8 due to many years of that engine in various Range Rovers meaning I can rebuild them in my sleep and they are super simple to add things like injection.

Probably going for a manual, and probably 5 speed conversion as well. i need this to cruise comfortably on motorways. Not made up my mind completely yet.

The first hurdle is rebuilding my workshop after the floor cracked back in January. Welding up the various steel sections this weekend if it doesn’t chuck it down again. After that the search for the right car will start in earnest.

anyway, nice to be here. Cheers. Dom.

Welcome.
A V8 with a 5 sp does make for a long legged cruiser and if you add power then you also get a great GT car.

Good luck with finding the right one.

lots of people will tell you the V8 has a long final drive and a 5th gear is too tall with a standard 3.5 engine, ignore them!

whenever i drive a customers S im looking for another gear once i get to about 40mph, definitely 50mph because it feels unnecessary "busy" by contrast driving cars with 5 speed conversion including my own, they are much more refined and quieter, even at low speeds in the lower gears, thats presumably the iron casing on the LT77 makes for a quieter box. I see no downsides, other than the need to get my speedo recalibrated, i dont know how much its wrong by, but it must be quite a bit, if i redline it in second gear the my speedo shows only 32mph so its got to be around 20mph slow, still even that can have its upsides depending on who the passengers are :)

Welcome Domdom.
Penguin, I just got my speedo connected up to my LT77 and in my case when it reads 20mph I'm already well past 30mph! I also need to get the instrument recalibrated. Odd that they can read wrongly both fast and slow, isn't it!?

my car was auto, but i dont expect auto/manual to make any difference, most likely the difference is our gearboxes came from different applications so have different drive gears for the speedo? Harvey will probably be along shortly and enlighten us :)

Sparky sits at 2,330rpm at 70mph, so quite refined as it was originally 3,000 or so with the standard diff and gearbox. The 5th speed on the LT77 dropped it to 2,500rpm and the Jag diff (2.88) dropped it to the 2,330rpm.

mind me asking which Jag diff you used?
