Hi all , Have been reading the forum for quite some time now and always find it interesting and informative and now that i need to pick your brains i have joined !! I have had a MK 1 2000 SC for the last 17 yrs a one owner before me and still only 54000 on the clock , she has been great and very reliable over all , we will never part and i shall prob be buried in her !
Anyway on to my problem ... I have recently noticed that the ignition light is very slightly coming on ( you can only really see it when its dark outside) the light comes on normally at very slow idle and go out as the engine speed increases but then comes on very dimly during normal driving , today the battery was completely discharged , i have changed the battery as i suspect it was faulty ( it was under guarantee ) as it seemed to be leaking a little and fizzing a bit after a long journey say over an hour or so . I have had no blown lights or faults with other elec eqpt' so am guessing its not overcharging . cant really understand why the ignition light is not coming on stronger if the Dynamo is failing or failed .... ? Any ideas ? ! Have replaced fan belt and checked tension all good there . Thanks very much , all the best Paul .

Most likely problem is the regulator! But first try the easy bit and check whether you have any brushes left in the dynamo. (Just like you had on your hornby train / scalextric when you were a lad!) Check the workshop manual to see if it has any wise words on setting up the regulator (I've only got the V8 one so all alternator). If not do a bit of a web search and if still foxed start visiting auto-jumbles for a 2nd hand one or splash out on a new one at, for instance, http://www.holden.co.uk/.

City Grey and Red Leather! Very classy! And if you've owned her for 17 years you should be really proud of the condition she's in!

Chris

Thanks Chris , She's actually burnt grey and yes v proud of her condition bit of help from the guys from Rovers return up in Lancashire about 13 yrs ago and more recently some excellent work by Colin Gould in Swindon . Plus a hell of a lot of tinkering etc from me !! But its always so satisfying :D

We have the same dim ignition light on our 110, only seen at night though it is intermittent. It's been like it since I bought the car though (3 years) & the batterys always fully charged. Must take the dynamo off sometime though as the bearings are noisy when the weathers damp. Considering fitting an alternator & swapping polarity too.
