Hope someone can help me!!! I picked up my 'dream machine' yesterday and already it has turned into a nightmare!! 1971 3500 V8 Auto, It was heaven all the way from South Wales to Manchester. Then this morning the rear end has just dropped!!!!!!! What could it be? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I have had a look around and nothing is obvious, suggestions, best and worse case and prices would be great.

Thanks

I've only had mine for three weeks and it's not on the road. However, I've heard some horror stories in the past about the suspension mountings in the boot coming away because of rot around the mountings. You may want to check it out.

Hope it's not too serious.

Stef22,
There's a thread in this forum about de-dion tubes and their failure - Suggest have a read and see if it sounds familiar.
Regards, John.
p.s. You should have given me a call to see the car with you when you bought it, as it was in my area.

Has it dropped by the same amount on each side or is it lop sided?

Are the rear wheels still vertical?

I'm not sure the top arms coming away from the boot floor would cause it to drop. They will just allow the wheels to move around under acceleration/braking

stef22,

As John says this has been weel covered in other threads.

There are a few things that could have happened and probably all related to the De Dion tube.

A funny contraption which fits between the rear hub. This can collapse due to rust or as happened to myself the trailing are mount sheared off. the other thing which may have happened it that the trailing arm mounts could have failed under the rear seat. All give the boy racer look on the rear with a horrible scraping noise.

Is they rear of the car actually on the ground or is the car just lower and able to drive? if this is the case then could just be broken spring.

Best to have a good look and let everyone know perhaps find out the number of your local club organiser and give them a call.

Arthuy
