Help!!!! fault on Borg Warner 65

Hi again,
I've got a problem with the 65 autobox on my V8. When cold the gearbox is reluctant to change up into top gear, although this fault goes away when the gearbox has warmed up. When the gearbox has warmed up, the fault occurs the other way round! That is, it hangs on to top gear all the way down to about 7MPH and then "clonk" as if it is trying to find second and first at the same time. Also the box does not seem to change down to second through torque at low speeds. When the throttle is floored, the kick down works fine. I have had the sump off the box, and washed everything out, and done a complete fluid change, to no avail.

Any ideas Guy's?

Thanks

The down shift cable possibly needs adjusting, best go to an auto box place - it shouldn't take them to long to adjust

Hi There,
Thanks for your suggestion with the downshift cable. I have had this adjusted by a P6 specialist before, but all it seemed to do was change where the problem was in the rev-range. I have heard people discuss in the past that the downshift cable can become sticky with old age. I was starting to wonder if it's an internal pressure fault, or a problem with the speed governor at the back of the gearbox. The fluid in the gearbox has been in there about a year, and is still a nice fresh bright red colour, with no discolouration or nasty smells! I' starting to get a bit bored with having to keep manually shifting to second to avoid the clunk when pulling up at junctions.

Many Thanks
Kind Regards
Richard :)

Probably sticking valves in the box, many of these can be cleaned without taking the box out, so perhaps a service at an auto box garage is due

Thanks, I'll have to have a look round, and see if there are any good autobox specialists in my area. My friend and I went to the Newark natter night on Tuesday, and I think he was quite amused by the manual shifting at junctions!!!! :D

Hi Colin,
I haven't been to see a gearbox specialist yet. I've got a couple of weeks holiday in the middle of June, so I'll probably get it sorted out then. I've got a funny feeling that my box may well be shot though, as it shuddered a tiny bit when I was reversing up the drive yesterday. I think that the only way to really know what is going on with it is to get a specialist to road test the car, and then do a pressure check. The car has done 110,000 miles.

Best Wishes
Richard
