I came on this forum back in 2005 trying to locate my Dad's old P6, UAG416J. I knew the present owners name (Ken Holmes) but Not his contact details. Anyway, after a conversation with my Mum, she had Ken's details!!! I gave Ken a call to see if he was going to this years AGM so that I could show my 6 year old his Grandad's car. It turned out that the car had been off the road for a number of years & that Ken was thinking about selling her. After a brief chat with my wife, I had permission to view the car & if bought her, 1 of the Lancia's (Beta Spyder & Delta Integrale) would have to go due to lack of storage :( . The family went down to Derby in July to view the car &, apart from the layers of dust, was still very presentable. In September a friend & I went back down to Derby with the intention of getting the car started before any purchase price was agreed. We needed points etc & went to a local car accesory shop who told us of M.H. Annable & son. After a brief phone call, Clive was up at the garage stripping down the carbs & an hour later she was running :D. I was hoping to get her towed back to Leyland & re-commission her myself, but after seeing/hearing what was involved, I gave Annable's the pleasure. Three weeks later & I was sat in the drivers seat heading back home to Lancashire that was until I entered Glossop & she kept stalling (she's automatic). after half an hours rest, she fired up O.K. & also drove! The easy way to the motorway was left up a very steep & long hill (plus it was rush hour), so I went right & headed towards Sheffield, away from home! Going through Huddersfield & a mile from the motorway (again up hill) & she again stalled :( .This time I called for assistance & the very nice man said that it sounded like the condensor. The following morning I checked to see if the condensor had been changed & it hadn't. A quick phone call to my local car shop & they had one on the shelf, £2.95. At the moment everything seems to be O.K.

Why, you may be asking, have I gone to these great lengths? Well, if you don't know of UAG416J, she's one of the 12 U.K. cars fitted with air conditioning! My Dad was the 1st owner & Mum sold the car to Ken in 1991 after my Dad passed away. Now she's back in the family & you'll be able to see her at some shows next year. She's been getting LOTS of admiring looks & comments (my wife's getting really embarassed). For a 36 year old car with 68k miles which has been stood in a garage for 8 or so years, she's looking FANTASTIC. Yes, there's a few blemishes, but I'm nitpicking really. I'll post some photos up on my website tomorrow. Cheers, and sorry for the long post but I'm really chuffed :D

Lawrence,

That's a fine looking car!

Did your father live in Beverley by any chance?...... it seems familiar - and with an East Riding of Yorkshire 'plate.

Enjoy it!

Regards,

Phil. :)

No, we're originally from High Wycombe, Bucks., although I'm now in Leyland but my sister is in Beverley, bit of a coincidence? I was under the impression that the car was being used as a demonstrator by a garage in Scotland before my Dad bought her.

"..she's one of the 12 U.K. cars fitted with air conditioning.."

Good to know that such a rarity is in good running order :)

That is a beautiful car. Well done!

I reckon that figure of 12 UK cars with aircon is a bit of a red herring though - there's no way anyone can prove it. A lot of P6 myths stem from the late 1980's/early 1990's from people who were selling cars for inflated prices and making up the statistics as they went along.

I've seen quite a few dead or alive V8's with aircon, and reckon there were probably over 100 built (the unused aircon base units were used up in 1975-1977, on VIP's)

Rudiger do you have any more info?

Cheers

I remember now, there was a Mexico Brown air-con V8......in Beverley(!) about 15 years ago. CRH or CKH 126K ?.
Anyone have or know of that car?

Phil. ???

That's what I'm getting at - we've all seen aircon cars - Jim Brown had at least two examples at his premises when I was up there last - one of which was Ian Wilson's old white one, the other a dead blue one on a 'J' plate. I cannot believe there were just 12 of these cars!

I remember working on a 1973(L) 3500 in red with aircon which I assume was factory fitted, although at the time I worked on it it was a right pigs breakfast, presumably after previous unsuccessful attempts to get it working.
I ended up removing all the underbonnet parts but leaving the interior so it could all be refitted in the future once it was all sorted. I never did it though.

hi,
mike jones ( our past chairman ) has one, i believe eric boardman has it now. that white one of mine had one hell of an air-con system in it, the guy i bought it from had not used the air-con for about eight years and when i tried it it was still working and the best i have had ( cold wise ) it was one hell of a sealed system on that.

Nick (and others),
I've Just been talking to my Mum about how the car's running etc, & mentioned that it sounds as if there were more than 12 P6's manufactured with the air conditioning. She said that they were told that 12 "prototypes" had been produced & that the car my Dad bought was 1 of the 12. I'm not trying to come across as a "know-all", but it would be interesting to hear anyone elses thoughts???

I guess it depends on where the info came form originally - if from a "seller" then a pinch of salt needed. (eg recent estate for sale - one that has been for sale many times over the last year at decreasing asking prices - where the description claimed only 6 built - its around 150 or so)

However whether it be 12 or 24 or whatever, UK origin with air-con - she is still a gorgeous car, and a rare one!

(I wish only 6 estates had been built - then maybe I could flog my working one and the resto project for a vast sum!)

Just out of interest , Snapper , does the air con work ?
What's the box with 2 wires in front of the ignition coil ?
Nice car , anyway

I knew a chap who had a white LHD NADA 3500S in the early 90's. That had aircon , and unusually ,I think , a white vynil roof

Dave

Dave,
In answer to your question:-

Unfortunately the air-con isn't working at the moment, apparantley there's a broken piston within the compressor, although I've been reliabley informed that Borg Warner still manufacture them for around £190.

I have no idea what the white box is for, I'm still finding my way around the engine bay ???, but I shall try & report back to you.

That car (which was featured in P6 News years ago) is also with Jim Brown. You can't mistake it. It's been laid up in one of his garages for several years. It's a 1971 and has a white boot cover as well. It's in very good nick, but has an engine problem.
Cheers
