Hello from The Netherlands

Since yours is a laft hand drive car, the gearbox filler plug is on the drivers side tunnel.
A good 20W50 will be enough. If the gearbox is noisy in the intermediate gears, eventually you will have to replace the bearings, at least from the layshaft. But it can go like this for ages.

Found it !
There was hardly any oil in it, I could pour almost a liter in it…
There is no difference in the noise, at least not much , so damage is already there

Second picture is with oil.

Dear all,

First of all, I’m glad to have found this forum and be able to participate in it.
After all, it is very valuable for both parties and can save a lot of time and frustration to share information and knowledge about common or nasty problems. Most likely, I will start new topics during my P6 journey, discovering the ins and outs.

For now:

I collected the car last Friday, gave it an extremely good clean and polish on the outside, as well as the inside.

Things on my list are:
  • Coolant change (Done)
  • Gearbox oil check (Done, there wasn’t any oil left which explains the gearbox noise unfortunately)
I added 20W50 mineral oil for the time being, gearbox repair is something to be done later on.
  • Engine RPM changed randomly (Done, the throttle return spring was missing)
  • Put a bowler hat on the rear shelf (Done, don't know the english word for it)
  • Engine oil change
  • Valve clearance check
  • Engine compression check
  • Adding electronic ignition
  • Etc, etc, etc…

oFF TO A GOOD START! My P6B S came with gearbox oil that looked like a cross between Creme de Menthe and Advocaat! Quickly got some straight 20W

Hello Wilfred.
Lots of love for the P6 in Holland.
As well as the chap ChrisW has mentioned, there's a fellow called Jan Waanders with many years experience servicing them, and with many spare parts.
Your new vehicle looks nice.

It’s a small world..
Here in The Netherlands we have a website called “Marktplaats” from which you can buy used and new items, I just found two headrest things for the front seats in my Rover (Or how do you call them ?), and guess the sellers name. The funny thing is that the sellers name is not displayed on the ad. It only becomes visible when you get information from the distribution center.

Hello,

Things are going well with my P6.
After new quality oil putting in the engine and gearbox (there wasn’t any in the gearbox..), and driving a lot on the motorway with 3000 Rpm max, the sound of the engine is much nicer now and even the gearbox sounds not so dramatic anymore. However, replacement in time is on the todo list.

Another funny thing I discovered, I’m not superstitious but my other car, my Jaguar has a production date of the 3rd of April, which happens to be the same date as my eldest daughters birthday.

Also, my new Rover P6 has been registered here in The Netherlands on the 1st of June, which happens to be my youngest son’s birthday

(Not counting the years of birth though)

Anyway, if I would have been looking for it, I would never have found it!

A very sunny weekend!

Wilfred
