hello all. just taken the plunge today and bought a 1971 3500s. the p6 has always been on my classic car wishlist and now i've finally gone and done it. not sure if its wise to go for a v8 but you only live once
i am collecting the car on saturday and will post some pictures as soon as...she is mexico brown with a vinyl roof, leather interior and seems pretty sound. i had a good look around the boot, under the back seats, around the sills etc and couldn't turn up any rust. the engine oil pressure is 30+ on the gauge when the engine is warm. the gearbox has been replaced with a 5 speed from an sd1. there are lots of little bits which need attention though, it is far from concours. the tops of the rear seats have split, the windscreen surround rubber is split in places, the intermittent wiper setting doesn't and the washers don't, the speedo doesn't read correctly (presumably due to the 5 speed box, hope this is easy to sort!) i am sure i will be posting questions on all these irritating things as i get around to looking at them.
the car comes with 2 large red ring bound workshop manuals and a boot full of old spare parts as well.

don't see many p6's in northampton on my travels, are there any people on the forum who are nearby?

Welcome to P6 motoring! You could be in luck with a '71 car. As a general rule the older cars seem to have been made from a better quality steel and are less rust prone than the later ones. But note definitely NOT immune!

All the issues you mention have been covered in depth on here, so I should start by having a play with the search function.

Best of luck

Chris

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Sounds like a solid P6, be nice to see your photo's!
There are a few forum members that live in Northampton, we have a `Brian of Northampton` who I know will introduce himself at some stage!

But in the meantime enjoy the world of all things P6.

Mike.

Welcome aboard Ian!

Of course it's wise to go for the V8..if only for the burble! I'm sure (like me!) it'll put a smile on your face every time you slide behind the wheel! :D

As Chris says, use the Search and you'll find loads of info. Intermittent wipers, for instance...and that famous piece of sponge!

Looking forward to some pics.

Cheers,

Stan

thanks for the welcome chaps...collecting tomorrow morning, looking forward to the drive back. looking forward to sorting all the little niggles, after a quick glance it looks like the forum will have all the info i will need. i only need to find the cash now

stan...i think the V8 will keep me smiling as long as it doesn't have any problems that i haven't picked up!

pics to follow over the weekend then...

Hi Ian,

Glad to hear from you here on the forum, and that you're also local to me! I thought I was the only one for ages ..... and then two turn up at once! Roverama recently joined, you can spot his Welcome entry under "Hi Everyone - New Member Alert.....".

I'm in the Hunsbury part of Northampton and look forward to making your acquaintance. I'd love to see your car....

Cheers,
Brian.

well,

the 60 mile run home was a pleasure...the V8 burble kept me smiling all the way, well that and thrashing the b****x of it most of the way along the A14 8)

brian, we are based in kingsthorpe. i look forward to meeting you to get some advice about sorting out all the little bits and bobs which need tidying up.
