Heather motor upgrade.

It was me that started the Metro motor/cage conversion. Yes, the heater box needed modification as the cage is bigger, but that's the point of it. The bigger cage will shift more air.

Have you got a link to this thread Demetris?

Luckily the Metro motor I acquired is still around. I think the main reason I discounted it was the motor case does not have a mounting flange. Perhaps Demetris can confirm whether he used this type, or his came with a flange.

Well at least it is traffic, there's a lot of forums withering on the vine. You can't have exceptional content 24/7, but if you have content you're breathing another day.

I do frequent a few forums. The busiest one is so fast I can't keep up with it, with dozens, sometimes many dozens of posts per day.

This one is the second busiest, and then there are others that have no posts in a day and sometimes can go a whole week with nothing.

I am on Farsebook but really only to keep in touch with my kids, even more important now we are heading for another lockdown.

That is heartening to know. Obviously excellent leadership is the key.

As far as i remember i never did a proper write up on the modification, but i will try and describe it as best as i can.
The Metro motor was at heart a common Smiths motor, with different mountings, and different windings (more windings with a thinner wire, i am not sure what this means...). It was very easy to swap mountings between the P6 and the Metro motor, plug and play as they say. It only required some shimming to bring the lower part of the cage in line with the rear plate of the cage housing. Also i had to enlarge somewhat the hole of the rear plate of the cage housing, in order to allow the bigger cage to pass through. As the new cage was also deeper, i had to modify the front plate of the cage housing, to allow the cage to come a little forward into the plenum chamber. If i remember correctly i also had to press a small bulge in the centre of the motor cover at the back of the heater box.
Obviously i had the heater box apart in order to do all this.
@ Cobraboy, i think if you remove the foam from your motor, it will be obvious if it is doable or not.

Carrying on with this latest thread on the Metro heather fan, l just got one myself as part of the Bruiser project:

I’ve done this mod. As has been said you need to widen the hole for the cage by a couple of millimetres (I just used a file) and I used a universal adjusting tool to press out the centre of the cover at the back by again a couple of millimetres. (A better adjustment might have been to cut a large circular shim from aluminium or some such.) I used the metro’s resistor mounted where the p6 resistor is mounted. It is a much more powerful heater fan and far more effective at clearing the screen in winter. It’s also a lot quieter at higher speeds, although my old P6 fan was getting very wheezy and whiny.

Good to know, thanks for that. Is the universal adjusting tool the one that looks a bit like a hammer? ;)
I might use your shim suggestion instead.
I tested mine the other day & both speeds work fine.

Following this thread as my fan died during the coldest spell this winter, and I'd be keen to upgrade it. There are absolutely zero Metros or Montegos to be found here, so I'll have to look for something else to modify and fit. Are there reports of other usable units having been tried?

Not that l have seen. If you can buy a heater here in the U.K then l'm happy to have it sent to me to remove the motor & fan then send them on to you. My wife has sent goods to Scandanavia in the course of her vintage business & says it will cost £15 - £20 postage.
I googled here:

austin metro heater - Google Suche

I bought the one top left marked £36 though we settled at £25 & my wife collected it. He tested it first for me before l paid. The £29.99 one looks the next likely candidate though l'd ask for it to be tested first & see if he'll take an offer. It's £10 U.K postage. You can enquire about direct postage of course but if that's a no-go then send it to me.

Have a think about it, it will be a definite advantage in your climate l should think. ;)

You’re not much wrong! :)
Thanks very much for the offer! I do see one on eBay with no description, and reckon it’d be a bit of work to go down that route. If I knew the basic size of the motor and cage assembly I might hit up the local breakers for a suitable unit from some small car. Alternately, when I get a promised P6 heater unit from a local contract I can measure that and take it from there.
