Heater fan keeps running with the key out.

Hi all,

I've searched high and low through the forum without finding any reference to this particular problem, so please forgive me if I missed it in here somewhere.

I've just had the heater unit out of my V8 for a good clean-up and unblocking of the matrix. Since I put it back in I've noticed that the heater fan continues running when the car is switched off and the key removed. I'm not sure what the hell could have gone wrong there - there are only three wires, colour coded, and I've returned them to their original connectors. This leads me to believe I'm missing something really basic! Any ideas?

As a further clue, with the key out the fan control knob switches the fan on and off and moves it up and down the speeds, just like it does when the car is running.

Sounds like you’ve connected the wrong wire to the feed. Instead of an ignition controlled wore you’ve found a permanent live. I would look for the constant + feed going into the fan switch. My guess you’ll find an unused ignition controlled wire nearby that should be plugged in.

'72. All the wires went back into the same connectors (I think!). Certainly the colours all matched. I might have to take a photo tonight and stick it up here for you to look.

just had a quick consult of the wiring diagram and it appears as thought, the switches are earth return so possibly a shorted to ground wire on the switch side which could cause the described symptoms.
