Headlight problems

Back in the day I used to save all the fuses out of the cars I dismantled for later use.
I never bought any fuses, and I still have a baccy tin full of them somewhere. And if anyone thinks that's bad practice, I never charged for supplying and fitting fuses.

Hi All. I have been surfing the forum and stumbled onto this thread (plus another commenced by 'CODEKIDDIE' sometime ago) concerning bizarre behaviour of the S2 P6 headlights and relays. Some of you may have noticed my posts concerning the restoration of my S2 P6B on the Projects bit. I now declare my auto-elec capabilities are limited. Anyway ...

Some time ago, prior to commencing my restoration project, I noticed similar problems with lighting to those described above. Then, upon inspection, I found an array of relays, poorly installed, amongst the cabling for the headlights. From my point-of-view I saw the relays as being the cause of the problem so I removed the relays, soldered and insulated the cables, back to original and ... the same problem persisted. Maybe worth mentioning that all lights were (are still) stock standard.

Moving forward, I decided to check the earthing. It appears there are two common earthing points to the rear of the right/left valance panels (389058/9) - some distance from the front lights. I disassembled and cleaned both earthing points, reassembled and ... the same problem persisted. I then earthed the lights directly to the valance panels, above the headlights, adjacent to the bonnet lock platform (389019) ... problem resolved ... to this day.

The blue bits indicate the 1/8in hole for the earth pick-up(s) and the relation to the headlight mounting panels (366863). It all looks neat and understated but, obviously, there are alternative pick-up points. Hope this assists.
Pete.

I would assume the relays were there to remove a lot of the power from the fuse box which tends to melt now and again.

ours was well melted at the Head lamp fuses so replaced the whole fuse box with a 16 unit generic one
our head lamps were one with a post war globe bulb one 75w/55w sealed beam two with H4s one of which the glass fell off when removed
a right job lot , replaced with 100/55 H4s in new lamp units . (yes i know about the wattage rules )
relays for main dip inner outer mounted on the inner wing plate and new harness to connect it all up
