Headlamps - Headlamps go off when high beam on

Hi to members. When I use the high beam, the headlamps turn off, leaving the high beam only working.

I presume that this problem is in the high beam switch, but would appreciate any advice that members could offer.

I had a problem with the high beam. When you put them on they would come on then die. sometimes flicker on an off.

Problem was the fuse box. The fuses were making poor contact due to dirt or the likes, If you touch the end of the fuse you'd likley burn your finger or you may see small blue sparks. You may find if you put the beam on and push the fuses up and down slightly in their mounting or even try tugging the box, if any thing happens then it is the place to start.

Is worth checking the box anyway, mine got melted.

It could be several things - Do the main beam filaments in the dip beam lights work? (It may be coincidence but both these filaments may have blown) Do you have a wiring diagram?
Use a test lamp in the bullet connectors between the main/dip switch and the sealed beam units to confirm current flow.
Later models had separate fuses for main and dip beams so Arthuy is right, worth checking these.
Regards, John.

Exactly the same happened to me - main beam on, headlamps off. Checked the fuse box and one of the fuses had a big lump of hardened plastic on it that had once melted. I cleaned this up put it back and saw the light.....
Cheers
Steve.
