Handbrake adjustment

I have a workshop manual & a Haynes manual but for the life of me can't see a section in either on how to adjust the handbrake. Mine is currently pointing up towards the rear view mirror at the moment (alright....more like the Webasto winding handle), which I think will be an MOT failure. The brake holds the car well enough though, even on the steepest hill. As this is the only point on which I think it MAY fail is it possible for me to adjust it?

Thanks.......Phil.

Phil, the handbrake is self adjusting via the pistons in the rear caliper, they work on a ratchet and tighten as the pads wear down. Are your pads worn ? is the obvious first question. (assume Girling brakes) .

PHIL,
the next thing is to see if there is any adjustment left on the cable itself. half way down the cable there are two locking nuts which can be undone and if the cable is slack (through being stretched) it can be tightened up

You would be surprised at how much travel is allowed on the MOT. So long as it is not at the end of its travel and will hold the car it will probably be alright on the Test. If there is any comment from the Tester I have always maintained they are all like that, a Tester who knows the P6 from when they were new tends to be sympathetic.

In addition, your rear disks may have corroded to the extent that not full pad contact is being achieved, which will prevent the handbrake ratchet within the caliper from advancing on a click.

Good luck

Gary
