Halogen light fitting

Hi, has anyone had problems/struggled to get Rimmer bros halogen light kit to fit? Cannot get it to locate in the three slots on car, seems too small.

That sounds familiar. I didn't buy mine from Rimmers (I'm not that rich) but had a similar problem. I swapped to a spare set of headlamp mounting rings from a Triumph Vitesse and they then fitted perfectly. Which probably isn't the solution you're looking for.

Having fitted halogens to Occie's outers a good few years ago (before I knew what I know now) I'm with Willy on this, both in observation and wealth.

Most, if not all, halogen replacements seem unable to replicate the original Lucas quality in terms of location lug accuracy.

Having discovered this, and done some research on voltage drop and its effect on lumen output, I fitted relays and rewired the Jag headlights in 4mm cable to replace the OEM 1.5-ish on both power feeds and earths. Retained the original sealed beams, and was astounded at the increased light output. :D

Plus knowing the high switching currents were banished from the dashboard area. Plus the original lamp curvature retained....unlike the weirdly flat-glass units floating around today.

No issues here, but I got mine from a well known P6 supplier so they were more likely to fit before i started i guess!

I got a set off eBay and found that they only fitted one pair of the car bowls, the other pair the lugs would not fit into. So I got a matching pair from anothe p6 I'm breaking and changed them over, so all four lights now fit.

Mine are genuine Bosch and are brilliant (literally). Never seen another pair so branded, maybe the previous owner adapted them from another car.

Rather than start a new thread on this subject I thought I'd continue this one. As I said above, I have a pair of Cibie H4 halogen outers fitted to Lady Charlotte and I'm now looking to replace the sealed beam inners with halogen units too (no I won't be fitting relays ;)). One of my inners failed a few weeks ago and both of my spares are no good. I have a couple of 75W inners but I'm not keen on fitting them to an S1 car due to the extra load on the system (150W versus 100W).

However, I'm a little confused as most of the conversion kits I've seen for inner main beam come with H1 lamps. Whilst H1 lamps are designed for main beam, they have a single connector. The sealed beam inners on the P6 have 2 connectors, which would suggest use of an H7 lamp, but H7 is designed for dip beam. Can you see my confusion?

A P6 supplier states on their website that the halogen inner conversion with H1 lamps is:

"a straightforward upgrade for the standard sealed beam units using your existing wiring"

My existing wiring has a 2 pin connector for the inner, so am I missing something?

Has anyone converted the inners to halogen and if so which lamps have you used?

Dave

Hi, the two wires onto the sealed beam unit are power and earth (because they're made of glass). So put the power lead onto the bulb connection and the other onto the mounting of the bulb for the earth. You will have to break open or cut off the plug.

Colin

I did the conversion with the H1 bulbs, and made new spade connections to the two wires.

I can't remember from memory, but the earth connection looks like it was a tab on the side of the new unit.

Thanks. I thought it might involve replacing the connectors. What brand of lamp did you opt for Phil?

Dave

Hi Phil,
Are they much brighter than standard headlamps ?
I like the idea of these without having to fit relays etc.

Mark.
To be honest, I have not done a lot of night time driving since fitting them, but I do remember thinking the effort was worth it. I know it's not much to go on, but here is a photo I took at the time after changing only the inner unit.

Certainly seems much brighter :)

They certainly look much brighter than originals.

The Cibie inner mains should come with a adapter that fits over the H1 bulb and sticks through the rubber boot so you can use the original two wire connector.

I was never very happy with the low intensity of the Lucas sealed beam outers in dipped mode. So, when I found that one of the sealed beam elements had gone, I decided to replace all headlights with the type that takes the Halogen H4 and H1 lamps.
To get an idea of the change in light intesnisty, I did a "rough and ready" test using a mobile phone light meter app. The LUX readings are on the cards in the pictures.

From below, I estimate:
Old sealed beam dipped total intensity (x2 lights) = 26,000 LUX
New Halogen H4 dipped total intensity (x2 lights) = 46,000 LUX = 77% increase with halogen over sealed

Old sealed beam full total intensity (x2 lights) = 44,000 LUX
New Halogen H4 dipped total intensity (x2 lights) = >120,000 LUX = greater than 172% increase with halogen over sealed.

All readings were taken at a distance of 0.8m. The background light was approx. 800 LUX. The light meter app only reads up to 30,000 LUX. Test could be skewed in favour of halogen; as the halogen lamps are new and the beams are old.

The test is a rough guide. I do not know the accuracy of the meter app. However, assuming the app is reasonably linear, I propose that the test is a valid indication of how much brighter halogen is than sealed beams?

That's a really helpful guide, Steve :)

I have a set of halogens in Hazel & they do give a better light. I also read somewhere that the more expensive halogen bulbs do tend to be much better in terms of brightness & longevity (you can pay between £4 & over £15 for what seems like the same bulbs).
