I have discovered a hairline crack in the base of my block.

Whats the general consensus, terminal or unlikely to cause any major concrn?

Thanks in anticipation

Is this an engine you've been using previously or something you've bought to recondition and fit? If it's the former I wouldn't worry about it, if it's the latter, if it isn't near any oilways, I wouldn't worry about it either. If you're a worrier, then all you could do is have it stitched, or stitch it yourself.

Thanks Harvey,

It's the original engine No 400-00233A so I'm keen to keep it alive if possible as it's so unique to the car. No idea if it was there before as i only spotted it when I cleaned it all up and just about to start the rebuild.

When I got the car it was clearly knackered and in need of a rebuild so I just removed it and left it alone until now......5 years later!

I was always minded to just refit and see what happens. It is right on the edge of the block and the only thing it compromises is the gearbox mount plate bolt but even then the crack is only on the top of the threaded tap.

I'd put it back then. Just don't overtighten that particular bolt, stick a touch of Loctite on it instead.

The block may have been dropped at sometime, and landed on that corner.

On the third pic the crack extends below the threaded hole as well, I would clean up the block around the corner and check carefully that there are no cracks starting on the other side.

Well spotted. I had look and it doesn't extend round the back so I think I'll give it a go anyway. Once the sump is bolted to it it will provide some measure of support.

I would de grease the inside and put some JB Weld over the crack, it wont strengthen it, but it might stop it leaking oil.
