Gear box pain

I'd check the prop and driveshaft uj's, and the diff pinion mount and bearer plate, because it's always worth doing that, but if it's definitely from the gearbox and third gear only then it could be something in the third/fourth synchro hub broken up and fouling, or if the noise is there in first and second as well but less so then it could be the rear mainshaft bearing. The hubs do suffer with bits chipping off, and the cages can break on the bearings allowing the balls to move closer together, forcing the cage outwards and making that catch somewhere. Either way, if it is internal, with the propensity of those boxes to grenade themselves, taking it out for a look sooner rather than later is a good idea. If it is internal, with a noise that loud the cause should be obvious when it's in bits in front of you.

Thanks Harvey I'll chat to the mechanic this morning!

Really stupid question it can heat do any damage to the gearbox as it was a hot day and I was running extremely hot, just getting close to the red zone?

The reason I ask is I let it sit for half an hour and drive it again and the noise wasn't there as loudly for a few minutes then it came back as I got hot again?

The hotter the oil is the thinner it gets, plus we don't know what type of oil is in there, and how much of it there is at the moment, so although all that will have some effect, with that kind of noise, it's unlikely to be cured with a simple oil change.

got the car to the mechanic today, he had a quick drive and believes I've done a bearing in the gearbox! Hopefully no other damage, but will pull it apart and have a look! So so far good news is should be able to be fixed!

If it's the rear mainshaft bearing they are expensive & hard to find, Rover specified a special tolerance for that bearing. All the other bearings are not hard to find, and it's not likely to be the mainsheet bearing from the sounds of the symptom.

Vern
