Gasket for oil pump cover

Currently cleaning all the bits around the timing cover. Oil pump gears does look good, on the inside of the cover only minor wear from the gears. Have polished the old valve piston but will install a new spring for it.
I´ve seen, that on both, the oil pump base and its cover, there was a gasket sticking. Or it was one gasket, which splitted when taking off the cover (?). I think, I have read something about taking care of distance between gears and cover and this can only be done with gasket(s), or ?
Could it be, that 2 gaskets are there or should be there ??

Hi Jorg,
There is only one gasket fitted, never had any problems of running clearance when i have overhauled them.
If you are going to use the standard oil pump gears i would change them anyway, get mine from Real Steel and they are so cheap
i would not reuse old gears.
A worthwhile upgrade is to use the MGB V8 spring, does increase oil pressure by about 10PSI ( only use with standard gears)
Again from Real Steel.
Regards,
Clive.

Hi Clive,
Thanks for it. Hmh, think you are right, now that everything is "open", I should do it right, maybe should also use the pump upgrade with the wider gears from RS then.

I have yet to fit my kit but their kit requires the spacing plate to be dowled to the front cover after first getting the running clearance
of the gears in spacer (running clearance shim in kit).
Some members here have fitted kits that dont need any mods so there are choices.
Clive.

I used the Real Steel kit, you wrap the supplied shim around the gears, bolt down the spacer plate and drill the holes for the dowels with the drill bit in the kit.
However, when assembled there were tight spots. I don't know if it was something I didn't do right but I ended up having to carefully file the spacer plate in a couple of places to get the gears to turn freely.
I used a (new) standard spring, I think an uprated/stronger spring with the bigger gears will put a lot of strain on the oil pump drive gears.
Edit - check the end clearance on the pump gears, not all oil pump gaskets are the same thickness.
