Future of the forum

Can someone explain why it cannot continue in this format under different management ?

There is no reason why it can't continue in this way. Rich is asking for people to put forward options.. if someone has the skills and wants to keep it as is, then that's something that we can vote on.

I believe that falkor wants to migrate it to a platform that he's more comfortable with.

So after looking through the pages, it seems as though we actually have very few options being tabled. None of the clubs or suppliers have weighed in.

1. falkor - migrate to a phpBB format
2. Ban306 - build a new forum with new domain and hosting account
3. Quattro - Rich, did you speak with your IT guy?
4. Various offers to pay for upkeep/hosting

Right now, we only have one serious offer, and that's falkor - however, going to a php format seems like taking a step backwards.

Chris are you able to set up a poll?:)

I don't feel that the poll should be set up by anybody "offering a solution", the poll should be "independent" and set up by someone outside of the solutions circle, so can you (or maybe Rich) begin the Poll? otherwise this is going to drag on for another week :p

You missed...
5. cobraboy - Keep the same forum run by new management.

Do you have the technical knowledge to support the forum, and keep it going if there is an issue?

That has to be a pre-requisite to anyone taking this on..

Already stated no.

That's a problem.. I'd certainly add your offer to a poll, but if you can't recover or admin the system should there be an issue, you'd be great as an admin, but not to run the show..

Someone needs to take over, who can handle the technical aspects. An admin team would be great, to manage things day to day, but an overall technical lead must be included in any option.

Sorry Chris, wires must be crossed.
I offered up 5. as an option, I did not offer to take over the existing forum and run it. I could not see keeping the existing forum under new management as an option and wondered why.
I now assume that is because no one has offered to offered to do it that way.

I seriously doubt my ability to log in sometimes, I don't think I am your man here.

I don't what the difference is between this forum ( whatever it is ) and phpBB ( whatever that is ) and I bet I am not the only one, so perhaps an idiot guide to the differences may be in order before a poll is issued ?

Perhaps we should all chip in to buy Rich a monthly massage and keep it with him.

Hi - OK. This forum is run on a commercial platform called xenforo. The forum actually used to be on phpbb. phpbb is a more primitive system to manage a forum with.

In terms of hosting xenforo is easier to administer, and is a more modern system with features like gallery.

There are loads of plugins available for it.

xenforo requires php and a my sql database exactly the same as phpbb so the stack is the same. It's just a more modern platform.

If someone was willing to do all the technical stuff i could just give them a login to the server and ftp access as long as my costs are covered. Seems a little complicated though.

The other advantage of xenforo, is that as a paid solution support is actually available from the authors of the software. It's not like phpbb where if something goes wrong you end up trawling endless forums.

Rich.

Yep.. I've only listed the options offered.

The only option I didn't list is to archive the forum, and shut it down until someone else is ready to take it on in the future..

How about we all have a Skype conference at a certain time and date to discus matters of the forum until a resolution is found.
I very much doubt that someone with the full knowledge of this forum is going to walk through the door.
So I think everyone who is interested in running the IT side to get together and we will have to learn it.
Then have some admins to help with the admin side of things.
I am happy to learn the IT side and one question, Falks are you interested in learning this as well?
Also anyone else?

Thank you Rich, ditto # 71

I'll just add: I can't help because I don;t know what I'm doing and I have no time with little ones to learn it. I would like to express massive thanks to Rich for getting us this far, and I will support where I can whoever and however we move forwards. I'd forgotten what a great repository of information and knowledge this forum is.

a repository indeed! :D yes quite right and a Skype conference would be good , count me in

I don't think that we need some kind of club-style AGM over skype. I think that a simple poll would be more beneficial.

Once a decision has been made, then those who plan on taking the forum forward can happily hop onto skype and check each other out to their hearts content.

An agm club style conference that sounds boring my original idea that attracted only one members interest, was to set a time and date once a week for owners to take part in a discussion format about there P6 or anything else they wanted to talk about to ask questions or talk about there Rover or exciting experiences and to have a laugh and listen to the amazing stories of how people become involved with there P6 or people who worked for Rover, and for other owners who did not want to take part they would still have the ability to listen in so a kind of P6 talk radio show once a week, and because it was for once a week it wouldn’t take anything away from the forum.
As we network my idea was that we might find some people with the IT skills needed for the forum,
and as we all share ideas we could intern all improve the main forum, communication by text is great
but voice is much quicker and more easy and it was for fun lighthearted discussion mainly, just an idea guys

some great ideas being put forward, Chrisw originally came up with it's time to create a poll, Chris can you set up the poll as you had the idea please? and I do support Ban306 in his ideas above which are very good
