Full lock doesn’t hit lock stop

Turning the steering wheel to full left lock I can poke my finger between the RH lock stop bolt and the side(?) rod joint. I get 1 1/2 turns of the steering wheel. Full right gives me 1 3/4 turns and the joint opposite touches the stop bolt on the LHS. I can’t see any obstruction. Can the damper drop arm have been removed and refitted wrongly to cause this? The car was converted to LHD by a previous owner.

It's possible. I'd disconnect the steering siderod from the idler and see if you get full travel then. If so the idler is the problem. If the steering box or the idler haven't got their drop arms on in the correct position in the centre of the range of movement you will get problems like this.

I’ll try disconnecting the side rod. I asked on here before about the steering box (PAS), but was told the drop arm on it was an unlikely culprit as it would have to be out by something big, and could only fit a certain way or two due to some form of locator notches or some such.

It also looks to me like it is sitting low on the splines, but I don’t have trained eyes beyond spotting the oily mess the box makes.

It looks like a master spline on the shaft in your pic so if that's the only one then it can't be fitted incorrectly. LHD & RHD droparms are different, so maybe as yours was a conversion the RHD drop arm was fitted to the LHD steering box. (If that's possible).

Odd. My 1977 parts book doesnt list the idler/damper arm at all (only complete assy), nor does the idler or damper appear in the description index, but it does appear in the part no index. 565501 is listed as the idler for power steering, but also as the LHD for manual steering..?? 565500 lists for RHD manual steering?

I'll try to identify it. There's reason to trust that the whole kit is LHD-specific.

Is there a good additive I can put in the damper oil to stem or reduce leaks in the replacement unit I have? Getting it worked on by a shop is a challenge.
