I have a 1971 P6 V8. Looking for a replacement petrol tank, have been offered a tank from a 2000 , would it be the same?

Not the same, 2000 is smaller.

2000 tanks are 12 gallon, whereas V8s are 15 gallon. They will fit in the same space, if it's your only option..
