Fuel system

Hi
I have a 3550s it seems to have an electric fuel pump that runs continuously?
is it firstly correct to have an electric pump, and also why does it run continuously?
as I’m sure you can tell this is my first v8 and would prefer to do it correctly thank you for helping

Hi Paul,

Yes to both. The 3500S has an electric fuel pump, and it runs continuously. The reason being is the fuel system was designed with a spill return, meaning excess fuel is diverted returning to the tank. Correspondingly, the pump runs continuously. Cars with pumps that are discontinuous do not feature a spill return system.

Hi & welcome to V8 ownership.

The original pump would have been a mechanical one at the LHS front of the engine.

Many owners convert to electronic pumps in a bid to reduce possible fuel starvation although the jury is probably still out as to whether it helps.

My 74 3500S came with a mechanical engine driven pump, converted to electric by me recently.
