Fuel sender refurbishment guide?

Hi - does anyone have experience checking/cleaning/repairing the fuel sender unit? I'm looking at doing mine - it was working prior to me removing it to clean the tank out, so I'm assuming it's something simple. The device itself looks simple enough but any advice appreciated!?
 
I have recently got my none working sender working after 3 attempts .
The first time I noticed nothing wrong so I just cleaned it and put it back in the tank and the gauge still not working.
The second time I noticed the tiny thin wire that is connected to the rheostat was not soldered onto yhe connection properly so re soldered after a gentle clean tested it before putting back in the tank and appeared to work but when re installed still no joy.
The third time I attacked it I realised I had missed a simple fault...... Yes the float was full of fuel ( how the hell did I miss that) I emptied out and re sealed it using my soldering iron and melted a plastic cable tie over the tiny hole that was caused by the end of the metal arm it is connected to.
