Fuel filter and crankcase breather

Hi,

as a newcomer to P6-land I wonder which replacements do you use for the fuel filter and the rear engine breather. If found these parts numbers for (Range) Rover
- 606168 (rear engine breather) -> ?
- JS660L (fuel filter) -> can be replaced with MANN WK 31/2 and Lucas FDB170

I also wonder if the two are interchangeable.

Thanks, the fuel filter I got (Lucas) has an arrow that points "to carb" how would I fit it as a rear breather? Arrow down south?

Thomas

I would have said in the direction of airflow - ie towards the air filter , but I can't really see why it makes a diffrence

The engine breather fits the opposite way to the fuel filter, the fuel filter having "IN" on the bottom (ooh errr missus) and the engine breather "IN" on the top, although I can't really see what difference it makes on the engine breather either.

Hello Dave,

I am sure that you meant to say...not toward the air filter. As you know, air flows down through the engine breather filter and into the engine crankcase, the hot fumes exiting via the flame trap hoses into the carburettors.

The engine breather filter if marked with an arrow will point downwards entering the engine, and if marked with IN then this will appear at the top indicating that air flows in at this point.

I got it wrong. I thought air came out of the crankcase breather , not went in

My logic (flawed, obviously) was that that the air in the crankcase got there past the piston rings and all breathers were to allow it to escape

However what's the point of having this filter at all ? Why not by-pass it ?

Hello Dave,

To be quite honest I really don't know. You could always conduct an experiment,..remove the filter from your engine, block the hose with something suitable and then go for a good long drive and see what happens.

I drove for 1000 miles with the hose unplugged from the air filter. Fit the hose after I saw it but didn't recognize any difference yet. Will fit the new filter soon and see if anything changes.

The filter on the breather is there to stop dirt going into the crankcase not oil coming out. If you like at your airbox you'll see that the breather pipe is conected to it directly behind the inlet opening and my understanding is that fresh air is positively forced into the crankcase by the cars' forward motion and any blow-by gasses are then pushed up through the flame traps and into the carbs to be burnt off.

Good thinking, testrider

I wouldn't blank the pipe off as that would be asking for extra oil leaks due to crankcase pressurisation, but would it ,if the pipe is an air inlet ?

It probably won't make a difference to oil leaks but might upset the balance of vacuum versus crank case gas pressure in the inlet manifold.

I'm not sure if I should be reviving an old thread, but I've got a slight problem with my engine breather filter. Or, more accurately, a problem with my memory! I have the filter and the bracket, plus the nipply thing on the back of the engine. So far so good. Hose end to nipple, other end to filter, filter in bracket... but where does the hose that goes on the top of the filter go to? I can't spot it, and my disassembly photos don't show me! Help! Anybody got a picture?

Yes! It just occurred to me, and I was coming back here to scratch that post, but you beat me to it. Told you my memory was dodgy!
