Front Suspension Removal

Hi all,

I tried to pull a pair of calipers from a scrapper earlier and failed due to rounded bolts. I need to get the front suspension dismantled to get it on the bench to have them off. I can't find my spring compressors, and access to fit them doesn't look great. Is there any other safe way to remove them? Is it possible to drop it on the deck, disconnect the lower arms and then raise it (i'll be using a loader so well clear). Even with the spring compressors on what is the best option?

Thanks,

Hi, It looks like the damper is still on there, if so leave it there that will stop the the upper arm going down too far. You can then release the upper and lower balljoints and steering side rod to remove the strut.

I haven't found it necessary to compress the spring when dismantling parts cars. Just undo the 4 nuts - 2 outside the door pillar, 2 inside the car - and the pressure will release all on its own. Obviously you don't want anyone standing in front while doing this, but it won't go off violently.

Thanks guys. I was thinking about it again this morning. If I put a loader fork under the crank near the top ball joint I could undo the lower arms from the safety of the engine bay and then release the pressure on the loader. By the way the shocks are still there. Never knew they'd hold it.

Dave

The shocks will hold it up fine. As it stands in that picture you just have to knock loose the top & bottom ball joints. If you do have to remove the entire suspension, Willy has the hot tip, unbolting the crank arm defuses the spring without much fuss at all.
