Front Suspension - Cracking Noise

I hope someone will be able to help me. My 1975 P6B Auto developed a cracking noise from the steering a few weeks ago. I have changed the steering links and this now seems fine, however, on long journeys I have now noticed what I can only describe as another cracking noise only after doing a fair amount of mileage in any journey coming from what seems to be the front suspension, ie when I slow down you can feel ( and hear ) a cracking sensation coming up through the steering column.

This is driving me mad as I cannot locate where it is coming from.

Has anyone got any ideas please ? I seem to remember someone else having a similar problem reported here some months ago.

Thanks, Paul Dodd.

Hi, does the noise occur in a straight line or when you turn?

When you hear this noise when slowing down are you braking or easing back on the throttle?

I have noticed that the track rod ends nearest the bulkhead are so close that they can rub against the bodywork, this is visible from under the wheelarch.

It could also be the hydraulic dampers - worn bushes - these can 'chatter' particularly driving slowly over rough ground.

Have you checked the wheel bearings?

Good luck

Gary

HI PAUL,

TAKE THE WHEEL OFF ON THE SIDE THATS MAKING THE NOISE AND CHECK YOUR CHASSEY.

LOOK TOWARDS THE RIGHT LOWER SUSPENSION ARM AND SCRAPE AWAY ANYTHING THATS COVERING THE METAL IE LOOSOIL , UNDERSEAL ETC.

MY GUESS IS A CRACK HAS APPEARED ON THE LEG . SPOT OF GOOD WELDING SHOULD SORT THE PROBLEM

You may remember me asking if anyone could help me track down a 'cracking' noise' from the front suspension which felt like something was knocking the bulkhead.

It only seemed to happen on very hot days with no noise on cooler days, or when I had been on a long run.

The only thing I could think of was that the rubber in the front ball joints were made more flexible with the heat.

I eventually found that it was the top ball joint on the driver's side being slightly worn and the cracking noise ( this is the only way I could explain the noise ) was feeding back through the front spring to the bulkhead.

I replaced the ball joint and the noise is now gone. Phew !

Hope this helps someone out there.

Regards, Paul.
