Front ball joints

HI again

Plz could some one help me about the front ball joints on my 1975 p6 v8 need renewing. I have the joints, they still had them at my local motor factors! But from the manual it looks a little hard. I need a puller to remove the old one? Do you need a spring compressor also?

Ok
thanks in advance
Jonathan

Do you mean the bottom ball joints ?
If so then yes it is a tough job and you need a special puller.
I tried making one once, but still failed to get the joint out.
I ended up buying the complete arm for £70 ! (ouch), in fact I still have the new ball joint.

I have heard that if you have the proper rover puller then they come out easy enough. I have also heard of removing them by heating the whole lot up with a gas torch and then cooling quickly in a bucket of water, and the joint pops out.

I don't remember using a spring compressor.

Hope this helps

hi,
no you don't need a spring compressor. the spring will stay where it is. undo the steering side rod arm, the bottom two arms that fasten to the chassis and undo the brake pipe and you will have the front swivel pillar off complete with the top and bottom ball joints in them, where you can then take it to the bench and work on it.
