flushing oil?

having changed the cam and followers, replaced the oil pump and made sure the rocker shafts are in good condition i'm still getting a tap from the top end right hand bank, varies in loudness but always there at tickover but goes when revved quite high.
this leads me to the oilways being partly blocked,is there a way i can clean them out or flush them through? change the oil for paraffin maybe?

also seems to go quiet when on a very light throttle or coasting if this means anything? or does it sound like something other than the cam etc?

thanks craig

A tap that goes quiet when coasting on the V8 can often be a slight exhaust blow from the head to manifold joint...

There shouldn't be a full oil fountain inside your rocker covers, but there should be enough getting up there to cause a bit of spatter when you rev the engine with the covers off. In other words it should look shiny but not flooded when you take the covers off. Stina had a problem with her car and had to clean out the supply oilway at the front of the heads. Remember that the heads are reversible - one casting does both sides, so there appears to be an oilway at the back too, but that's just there in case you use the head on the other bank. Only the front oilway supplies oil.

Hi Craig,

What is your oil pressure like? Did it change by much after do all the above work that you listed?

A gallery blockage has a negative impact on oil pressure, hence the reason for my question.

oil pressure's ok, around 25psi at idle and 37psi when on the motorway, but it does seem to me to take its time getting there. its gone up a little since i put the oil pump on,maybe 10psi or so.

cheers craig

Hi Craig .
I had a long running saga with mine just after buying it . As Chris York wrote above one of the things i did was to ensure the oil flow to the top of the motor , i removed the rocker gear , rodded the supply hole in the head , ( the one under the front rocker pedestal supplies the shaft and rockers ) then spun the pump up with the drill to ensure oil flow to the top end . On examining the rocker causing the noise ( No 2 cyl exhaust ) the cup that the push rod runs in had worn away and dropped out (as a resault of running dry ) causing the clearance in the valve train , creating the tapping . Not something you'd easily spot when examining them .

Did you check and adjust your lifters pre load after fitting new camshaft and lifters? If your pre load is not sufficient, this could also cause tappet noise. Attached an instruction how to do this. If the preload is not oke, you can fit shims between the heads and the rocker shafts. This was not described in workshopmanuals but it is good to do because it can cause loss of power. with a V8, one not always notices this.

Ron, a gallery blockage will give an increased oil pressure compared to a non-blocked line

Peter

Of course, silly me, I was writing one thing whilst thinking of another, such as a blocked oil pickup which will diminish oil pressure.

thanks for the tips, gives me more to look at over the weekend.i didnt know about only 1 oilway per rocker shaft but i will be taking the shafts off to check them along with the manifold joints

yes i did check the preload and as such put shims under the pedestal to bring them back within limits.

tbh nothing i've done so far seems to have made any big difference, apart from the water pump bolts being too long and catching the pump  i have got a spare engine that i'm toying with putting in but that just feels like i'mgiving up too early.....

i've spent the day checking the oil ways and they're ok,and checking the 'new' rocker shafts there was some play in the arms so i borrowed a set off my spare engine...result is most of the noise gone :D

i'm going to get a new set but is it worth getting steel rockers? has anyone tried these off the bay? quite a lot cheaper than from 'v8 tuner' but his stuff is known to be good(at least the cam was)

I am advised that the steel rockers are noisy in operation.

There are a lot of cheap Rover V8 items out there, so always be wary.
