floppy gear stick

This is the way it should be assembled:

591985
571933
593617
591478
REMOTE

With them all stacked up like that.

Perfect. Thanks so much, it has been put back together in the wrong order at some point in the past then. I shall correct the order and see if my annoying buzz goes away. :D

I'm sure there are lots with them assembled incorrectly, I've certainly come across plenty, and with the boot retaining plate between the two ally halves of the spherical seat retainer the seat is going to be flopping about in and up and down direction, which isn't going to be helping with any "Buzz".

Sorry to revive an old thread but the parts lists are here - I've a problem, the shaft 594279 seems much too small for the hole in the ally housing and wobbles around in a circle instead of just rotating on its axis at the selector end but luckily the selector finger 622369 appears to be ok. Its got so bad now that 3rd to 2nd gearchanges usually result in 3rd to reverse (or rather lots of grating noises because it won't go in whilst driving forwards). Reverse can also be selected sometimes without having to lift the lever so I'm wondering if the bushes 591353(2) are available because it seems likely they've worn or gone? Also, what is 622386 A/R?

591353 are available and will stop the selector rod moving about in the remote. If they are missing that will make the selector rod drop down, but that shouldn't mean that you can engage reverse without lifting the detent sleeve on the gearlever. If that's the case it's normally 591985 has been fitted the wrong way around, but if that's so it normally happens all the time. 622386 were supposed to be wedged inbetween the selector rod and the remote housing in an effort to stop gearlever buzz.

Looking at the top of the gearbox whats happening is the rod has so much slop that it can move over sideways far enough for the finger to reach the reverse selector without needing to lift 591985 - it isn't on backwards either  When its lifted to get reverse the whole lever now moves right and 591985 drops down past the raised bit it should rest on (reverse stays engaged).
Do you know where can I get the bushes from? I've spent ages on the computer searching but no joy so far - I've had quite a lot of old cars but P6 spares have so far been the hardest to find!

Apologies, you're correct I got the numbers wrong - I did indeed mean the black plastic lift-up sleeve (which is on the right way round, as is the top ally bit). Thanks for the link, I'll have a look there for the bushes.

Harvey,
Have to take issue with this post of yours...
"This is the way it should be assembled:

591985
571933
593617
591478
REMOTE

With them all stacked up like that. "
The parts book diagram is very misleading on this.
When dismantled nine had
593617 direct on the remote, then
591478, then
571933 then
591985.
The reason this works for me is that both of the first 2 items have cut outs for the locating part of 571933. If it is done your way, why is there a cut out in 591478? The other way the bottom of 571933 is neatly flush with the bottom of 593617 and both locating cut outs are engaged.
??
thanks

Yours was assembled incorrectly then. If you put 591478 between 593617 and 591895 then the thickness of 591478 makes the spherical seat loose in the housing giving excess movement. The cutout in 591478 is superflous, but you can line it up with the groove through 593617 should you wish.

Well, I will try assembling it your way and see if its at all loose before I close it all up. I would have thought it would be well clamped by 591985.
thanks

EDIT - Harvey is correct. Did a trial assembly, and with the plate as mine was assembled the spherical seat has some latitude in its location. As in Harvey's sequence the seat sits fully in the alloy plate and is positively located. There is not much in it, but there is slack when its wrong.

PS - What makes a car fit the Parts Book's "Late" category? Which years or chassis suffixes? Based on my 74 D chassis its obviously later than this one.
