FITTING OF SPARE WHEEL ON BOOT?

Please forgive my ignorance but how does the spare tyre fit on to the top of the boot? I think P6's look amazing with this set up...

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Hi Justin,

Not all boot lids left the factory with the necessary equipment fitted for mounting the wheel. The distinguishing feature from the outside which seperates the two is the round badge in the top centre of the boot lid. On the underside of the lid, a framework is attached which provides the necessary strength so as to carry the wheel on the outside. There is also a brace arrangement that holds the boot lid open when the wheel is mounted upon it.

My understanding is that this feature was deleted by the factory after 1973. Boot lids fitted with the kit prior to this was random, and as mentioned above, not all were fitted.

Ron.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Thanks Ron, what did the round badge in the top centre of the boot lid look like?

Maybe it would be possible to do a bit of DIY in order to fit the spare on the boot without the factory engineered hole?

Like with some bungy cords?
No need really. You can pick up used boot lids with the touring kit fairly easily or you can fit the support framework to your existing boot lid without too much difficulty.

Touring option was available from very early on until end of production Ron but it was an optional extra (extra cost) so not that many cars had it but all the VIPs were equipped so it was still around then.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

A number of people have converted standard boot lids to the wheel carrying option by fitting the reinforcing plate from another bootlid and drilling the existing lid, a search on the forum should provide you all the necessary info to do it.
Alternatively you could find an optioned lid from a wrecker or ebay and then repaint to match your car.

Oh My G
Ive got to tell you this .
True story .
42yrs ago . In an iron ore field , in a place far far away , in the outback of West OZ.
I took delivery of my new rover [ with the boot mounted spare ] and drove her up to this pretty rough mining town where I was working .
A co-worker , who was a bit naive , was very impressed with the boot mount . It gave the extra space in the boot for more beer and stuff . Apparently !
One needed more space in a Falcon boot . You never knew where the next party needed to be held .
Nek minut !
Here is this Ford Falcon driving around town with a spare wheel mounted on the boot lid of his car .
A drill , long bolt with nut , bits of wood . All sorted .

They're easy to retrofit - a few of us have done it in the past.

I have a friend with a few NOS braces if you're interested, so would just need the remainder of the kit, which is easy enough to make up with a little ingenuity.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

It all sounds like too much trouble and to be honest if I did end up owning a P6 without the boot mount option I would probably leave it as god intended and not meddle with it as I'd only balls it up!

No deities involved in the design of the P6. All done by real people  . Fitting a boot mount kit is pretty straightforward and there are a few good guides both on the forum and in forum members' blogs.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

A huge percentage of survivors have had these fitted, I'd say more than half of those I've seen in recent years. Obviously nothing like this number were so fitted originally. My Tobacco example looks suspiciously Monza red from the inside :)

Can't say I generally bother with it though. Driving locally I simply don't carry a spare in either of my cars and I very rarely do any long-distance "touring". In 27 years of driving I've NEVER had a puncture.

All I can say is be very careful though, the aluminium skin on the boot dents very easily if you aren't careful.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Where would one obtain a boot mount kit? Also, isn't there a vinyl cover for the spare wheel when mounted and what did it originally look like? ie; did it say Rover with a picture of the Viking ship and was this cover also originally included with the boot mount manufactured cars?

And finally, is this what the boot badge looks like covering the spare wheel mount hole?

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Why would you bother fitting the spare on the outside? It spoils the beautiful lines of the P6 and you can´t see in the rearview mirror.
The spare of mine is in the boot and I have been on holiday in England with the P6 several times already with 2 adults and 2 children (14 and 16) and all luggage in the boot :D .
Just my two cents

Kees

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Justinus, the photo you attached of the round badge is indeeed what covers the hole in the boot if you don't mount the spare wheel on top. Yes, there is a also a vinyl wheel cover, some of which had a large embossed viking ship emblem, but no Rover lettering. There are two sizes of wheel cover, as the four cylinder cars were a narrower tyre width than the V8 cars. I don't know if the cover came with the kit, but I would have thought so. Try the usual suppliers, who are listed elsewhere on this forum (http://www.classicroverforum.net/viewforum.php?f=60), and there's always the For Sale section on here (http://www.classicroverforum.net/viewforum.php?f=33). Lastly, trawl ebay!

I'm led to believe the original thinking behind it was to allow the P6 to accommodate a set of golf clubs and this appeared in some advertising or press releases at the time. Given Rover clientele back in the day, I'd love to believe this was true.

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

I love the look of a boot mounted spare wheel, just one more thing that a P6 has that other cars don't, somewhat reminiscent of the more vintage era of cars, personally I think the boot end of a P6 is a little weak looking in the styling department and it needs something to take away the bland styling lines so either the spare wheel or some thing else such as Chris York's Boot mounted Jag brake lights.

Peter, what a brilliant and sweet idea, it was definitely the gentleman's car...

Each to their own :D & we're all better for it - I personally have never liked them - & the boot's not that small.... :?

I tend to think they ruin the look - just like badge bars!

I couldn't agree more Graeme, it finishes the cars look off beautifully and makes it look like your off on a world tour! I think my butt in a pair of Levi jeans looks like the back end of a P6 without the spare mounted !!

Re: FITTING OF SPARE TYRE ON BOOT?

Hi Justinus,

As others have said, it really is quite straight forward to fit. We ran an article on it in a previous issue of our Club Magazine (Driving Force) and we've also put it up on our website for anyone to access. It describes all the parts required and how to do it. Take a look here: http://www.p6club.com/content/fitting-boot-mount-spare

If you decide to go for it, you can take your time collecting the parts from eBay and/or the usual P6 suppliers. If you have any queries about it, as you've seen, there's plenty of help here :)

Cheers,
Bri.
