Fitting me GAZ front shocks, grease required?

Hi All,

Fitting new front shocks today.

Couple if questions, have removed shock using the excellent screwdriver through hole/spanner technique to compress rubber bush to remove split pin (thanks search function on this excellent forum). Do I fit the Gaz shock as is with no additional bushing either side?

Secondly, do I need to grease the poly bushes on the Gaz shocks and if so what sort of grease?

Thanks all

Richard.

There are two types of bushes, one piece and two piece. the one piece ones have to be squeezed through the eye of the shock so need to be greased. Normal rubber ones use specially formulated "rubber grease". I'd use that even with poly in case you go back to rubber for some reason later. Normal grease will destroy normal rubber as the hydrogen breaks the sulphide bond linking the carbon chains. Rubber grease is available in squeeze tubes these days so isn't too expensive for the occasional job. Oh, the two piece bush is the same thing in two halves and they do need to be pressed tightly together so ensure you use the second hole for the split pin and do the locknut up till it bottoms out on the shaft. Normally the polly bushes are one piece but it is somewhat of a lottery, they are also normally much harder too so getting the split pin in might take some effort!
