Finally got a V8 - at last!

Well, I've owned a few P6s over the years - a '69 2000tc, a '77 2200tc and most recently a '73 2000sc, I've finally got the one I always wanted - the defining car of the P6 range, a 3.5 V8.

If ever a car had my name on it, this one did. I first saw it for sale about 15 years ago and bid on it - I lost, but the winning bidder pulled out, so it was offered to me. I accepted, but it was a bit of a tricky time and I eventually pulled out. I learned at this time though that the car had belonged to a navy doctor, who had done lots of work on the car - completely rebuilt engine, LT77 gearbox to replace the original auto, new clutch, stainless exhaust system - but had never actually used it. Apparently he left the car in his garage, went to sea, married and never returned!

Fast forward 15 years (during which time I regretted more than once not going through with the sale) and the car came up again. I didn't buy it. It sold. Then, two weeks later it came up again. Again I didn't buy it. Again it sold. Two weeks later, up it came yet again - this time I bought it, as it just wouldn't leave me alone!

It needs its rear brakes replacing - I have the calipers and other bits, currently summoning up the courage to have a go at this somewhat notorious job!

It will need some welding too, mostly at the four sill corners I think.

The engine runs beautifully and is indeed a rebuilt one - all the internals are still nice and silvery.

I've had to replace the steering lock as well (Britax version), as the old one was faulty, however I can't seem to get hold of the shear bolts that hold the lock mechanism at the lock (rather than the steering wheel) end. I bought some from a well known seller that turned out to be completely wrong, and right now I'd settle for anything that will fit, and hold the whole thing together! The nearest I've found is an M6 bolt that has the right diameter, but too fine a thread. Does anyone know the bolt/thread size I need for this one?

Thanks!

Nice one Ulrich. Looking forward to reading about your successes in restoring the car you've always wanted. Whereabouts in the UK Capitol are you situated? I'm up in North London, where I try and use my K reg 3500 as often as possible. I'm sure someone knowledgeable on here will be able to tell you the type of bolts you'll need soon enough.

I'm in East London, near Ilford - good to know there's at least one other p6 owner nearby! I'm so looking forward to using this car - a few bits to do first though!

It's entirely possible of course - I don't know quite how far it will go when I start to strip it down in earnest! Fingers crossed though... Are these your videos Stue1972? I've watched quite a few of them and if that is you, you've done a very nice job of those repairs! Makes me wonder what I'll find though...

It is indeed me.
I try to do my best.
Fingers crossed for you, I'm sure it'll be ok.

Good luck with your project. still trying to get my rear brakes to pass handbrake test! ( fails every year) despite new callipers. pipes. discs, pads etc and cable etc . welding can be a pain so hope its less than you think though often what looks a small section often expands when stripped back! do take a few pics and update us all to progress.

I'll be sure to take some pics when I begin welding in earnest, won't be for a while yet but everything's ready to go when the opportunity comes along. I don't suppose anyone knows the size of the bolt I mentioned above? It's preventing me putting the steering wheel and lock back together, so I'm currently stalled on a pretty simple job for the want of a couple of bolts...
