Faulty temp gauge - How to check, gauge or sender ?

Hi guys
A regular sort of problem this time. My Temp gauge has just gone faulty. The needle sits on Cold, or sometimes creeps up halfway to the green. The engine/radiator seems as hot as ever (to the touch anyway) and runs fine. Could this be an electrical fault ?, and is there a way I can check whether is the sender or the gauge playing up ?

Thanks

Ron,
One quick check is to pull the wire off the sender unit and touch a good earth point - The gauge should then give a full scale reading (ignition "on" obviously) If it does then gauge is o.k. If it doesn't then gauge is faulty. The fact that needle moves means that sender is working, albeit inefficiently.

Hello Ron, can I hijack your topic to ask if John's answer would help to test fuel gauge/fuel tank sender, to find which is at fault.
Joe.

Hello Joe,
yes, exactly the same principle! Pull green/black wire from tank sender and touch a good earth and gauge should travel full scale.
Regards, John.
