Faulty Speedo, Clock, Tacho & Horn.

The speedo on my newly acquired '71 3500 auto is a big fat fibber. An indicated 18mph is actually 30, 40 is really nearly 60 and 60 has me reeling the horizon back very quickly indeed! Now I know the correct speeds I can live with it but it's a real pain. Any ideas?
Rev counter is totally inoperative - i'm not sure where to start looking. Again, any guidance appreciated.
The time clock only seems to work intermittently - again, where should I start looking.
And finally, the horn did work but it made a strangling noise and now works no more - whaddya reckon?

Thanks in adavance,

DD.

Diesel,

If you haven't already done so I would highly recommend the purchase of a haynes or rover workshop manual.

The wiring varied by model and year of production so I would be guessing here. on my 2200 the clock on the dash is fed from the horn there is a connector under the steering wheel behing the glovebox. I would think that this the same for 3500 models. the horn and clock may have a common fault. I think the same fuse does the rear side lights or brake lights, are yours working?

Have you checked the fuses?

You can also check that the horn is still working, if you put a good power supply accross it it will either honk or it wont. Near by the horns there is a supply for fog lights you could use the bare bullet connector to enegrise the horn. Most cars have twin horns one either side of the rad are both broke?

Start with the fuses and then the earths. I wouldn't worry to much about the clock as they are tempremental at times.

Is the speedo correct type for your car? has it been changed at any point? There may be a part number on the back that you could double check.

The clock is a dodgy one. You could try tapping it, there is an electric self winder that sometimes sticks.
Regarding the speedo - if it is series 2 round they are notoriously inaccurate - however you may have a four pot speedo in an eight pot or vice versa.
The screw it gauge (rev counter) should just be a lose connection at the coil as they always seem to work.
Horn - try WD40 on the front, I know it sounds daft but it sometimes works. Also if it is the correct one it should have an adjusting nut on the front for changing the tone, you could try messing with that.

Cheers guys. I'm off work tomorrow so i'll have a poke and prod as per your suggestions and report back. Otherwise, I love the car to bits and the stares of admiration and astonishment are a sight to behold, and a credit to ianP6mans workmanship.

Thanks again,

DD

Update;

Thanks to Arthuy, whose comments pointed me in the right direction. Turns out the fuse box was a touch corroded so all the fuses out and 1/2 hour with the nail file (oh yes, Ducky!) cleaned all the contacts and, sure enough, clock/horn/courtesy light all sprang back into life.

Cheers all,

DD.
