Faulty fuel gauge fixed!

Hi all,

This weekend I decided to fix my faulty fuel gauge. Running out of petrol with 3 kids in the car was the painful incentive I needed.
After checking the advice in previous posts I need to thank Vaultsman for his labelled PCB photos in this post:

Fuel & Temperature Gauges - Series 2

Earthing the sender wire and the sender unit made no difference. I had voltage present on the PCB plug B pins 3 & 4.

Following the wire back to the sender revealed this problem adjacent to the fuel tank in the boot.

The wires were reattached and success:)

I suspect at some point in the car’s previous life the fuel tank has been removed and refitted severing the wires.

I have found another severed wire in the boot (see below). I’m not sure where it goes to but originates from the wiring at the rear right hand wing.
Any ideas on where the purple wire should go?

Finally one job crossed off the ever expanding to do list.

Cheers all.
Paul.

Only purple I can see in the boot is the boot light, and a warning, it is live all the time even with ignition off, so connect it or isolate it to prevent a short.

Thanks roverp480.
That might explain why the boot light doesn’t work!
Severed cable has been isolated with insulation tape until another day.

Do have the wiring diagram, it always helps in these situations. Standard British wiring convention dictates plain Purple wires are none ignition controlled, so live , but are fused. Brown are live and not fused.
