Ex-Japan 3500 for sale in NZ...

Japan origin is supported by the cropped side light tell tales and side repeaters. The rear shelf mounted air con is common in Asia, whereas NZ and OZ seem to use the A/C in place of the passenger glove box or mounted in place of the radio fitment. I've seen P6's and P5's with it in the rear shelf originating from HK and Singapore, so maybe that is the standard Japanese aftermarket system, whereas the NZ and OZ ones are modelled on USA practice.

It's almond. It does look like a nice example and I agree it has all the hallmarks of a Jap import but that is a LOT of money for a p6! Not the most expensive one i've seen in NZ but pretty close. He's also had it for sale for quite some time so it's not rushing out the door.

I went to see an April yellow with a black leather interior, a 3500, an early one, for sale on a car yard in Yokohama about 4 years ago
I've seen a metallic red/crimson Series 2 V8 reviewed in Japans "Car" magazine last year, ( Kumagaya plates ) which is likely this same one: http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/156800900 and another series 2 V8 ( light green ) was for sale for ages on the Yahoo Japan Auction site
A NADA 3500S was parted out at a junkyard in Osaka about 2 years ago and all parts were offered online

P6's exist in Japan, as do P5's, but these are very very uncommon

Almond? I thought it was Buttercup. Better look again. Yes, it is expensive, but more has been asked for P6s here. I don't know if they ever sold at those values though. Do you know, Al?

So there are more old Rovers in Japan than I had previously imagined. This one made its way out to NZ in '86, which is quite a long way back for a Jap import. We do see plenty of later Rovers etc here ex-Japan, including such rarities as the MG RV8.

The ad says buttercup but I don't think the seller knows the difference tbh. He's certainly no expert on the P6 as we've seen from previous ads of his. It looks like almond to me and as it's a UK built car, I see no reason why it wouldn't be.
I don't think they sell at that price. The green Vintrim was listed at $14000 and I don't think anyone touched that. Several years ago there was a 3500S with fairly low mileage that was listed for $15000. Then $12000, then $9000, then $7500. I gather it sold for something less than that.
Most of the really expensive P6s have been listed by the same seller. He had a monza red for $13500 a while back and a lunar grey 'S' (visible in some pics of the almond one) for $11900.
I don't think they sell. Unless he manages to catch someone unfamiliar and dazzle them with the shiny, they probably look like a bargain next to a Jag or Austin Healey. But for most P6 enthusiasts, I think $8000 is about top dollar these days.

Dang, you've crushed my hopes. Brown Rover is at least as good, if not better, than some of those uber-expensive P6s advertised by Waimak. I was beginning to think of it as an alternative to saving for my retirement.

The Russian Defender! Made the country the world power it is today! I'll bet there's been a few takers too.

I imagine farmers and people who really need 4x4 lapping them up - it's not a pretend pretty 4x4. It's the real deal at a bargain price i think...

Is there an anorak around here who can tell us how many P6s went to Japan?

Less than 100 of all P6/P6B models; although the 3.0L Rover P5 was imported in very small numbers, the P5B was never imported as it was considered ( probably wrongly ) to be too difficult to pass emissions testing back then

Japan Wikipedia:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ローバー・P6

suggests that these sold between 2,650,000JPY and 5,250,000JPY which was a great deal of money 30-40 years ago, making these rare. Article suggests the competition for the P6 in the Japanese import market was the Alfa Romeo Alfetta
