Since I bought the vehicle and until recently the fuel gauge has been at almost zero, and the oil pressure gauge indicated a good reading (when in a benevolent mood) BUT recently these two gauges seem to take it in turns to show a reading ie petrol gauge makes a half hearted effort to indicate some sort of fuel quantity, and the oil pressure has 'a day off' whilst at other times the oil pressure gauge indicate 30 psi and the fuel gauges sits towards the bottom stop and just leaves me guessing ... is it possible that this could be a electrical problem ..
Would be so nice to win this 'battle of the gauges'

Most likely an electrical problem. There is I think on your model year , a 10 volt regulator in the circuit for the gauges , it may be playing up. It would be attached to the back of the instrument pack. I am sure someone will correct me if in error. The gauges also require a good earth so check that any black wires are well connected.
