Engine upgrade

Hope you get it sorted tomorrow! If you do end up needing a p6 timing cover i have my original engine form pae here, and could have a go at removing it, but i'd want one back in return someday as i intend to put a recon original engine back in a couple of years down the line!

Thanks guys , Harvey , wondering if the uprated gears are SD1 gears and would fit in the SD1 timing cover ? Still hoping i can do something with mine , it's a bolt that goes right through as apposed to a blind hole if i'm making sense . Probably why it sheared , water ingress over the years .

The gears are the same depth as SD1, but with the P6B oil pump drive, so as I said before I can't see any reason why they wouldn't work in the SD1 cover, but the drive gear isn't an SD1 one, although the other one probably is. It could be they are just SD1 gears with the P6B driveshaft knocked into one of them.
 
Thanks Harvey . Yeah my uprated gear set has the female spade to connect to my male dizzy drive shaft , so i might have a bid on the cover .

Hi Stina,

What was the condition of the OEM timing set please? Were there any teeth missing? Could you please post some pics of it if you wouldn't mind?

Have you set your new timing set to zero degrees given that you are not changing the camshaft at this time?

Hi Ron , set new gears to 0 deg . The old gears were ok . no teeth missing but the chain was very loose , stretched . I'll take a pic today and post it this evening .
 
I would just add , Stina ,don't feel useless . You're an inspiration to many of us
If you're ever up my way , I'll let you change my clutch
 
Hi guys . Todays progress . ( Thanks for the pick me up Dave :D I was due a good day ) . I filed the broken stub of the bolt flat and started again . I assembled the oil pump cover to the timing case and used that to centralise the drill , then drilled through the snapped bolt and tapped the thread , to be sure i filed the back of the casing flat and fitted a nut ( not one for the purists maybe , but i'm confident with it ) and have managed to save my timing cover . Spent about 4 or 5 hours getting the end float right on the cover . Hope i've got it right :? i've posted on Vaultsmans old thread more info and questions .
Any hoo some pics , plus the one of the original timing gears you asked for Ron . :D

Just caught up with this thread stina, looks like you've been bizzy, like the new signature pic of the engine bay very smart :)

The Morse chains seem to stretch rather a lot, or maybe they are loose right from the start... :?

Given that none of the nylon teeth had broken off in the 60,000 odd miles that your engine has seen, then that likely bodes well for the original camshaft and lifters too. I know that you are going to change them regardless, but for other members with Rovers of similar original mileage it likely will give them a feeling of assurance that their engines have a long way to go yet before needing a rebuild.

Well done so far. You might have broken the oil pump bolt but at least you remembered to refit the crank shaft oil thrower before putting the timing cover back on! :oops:

Only coz i read you had done that and was paranoid about leaving it on the bench :)

I have the timing cover back on and have primed it with the drill . It pulls the drill right down to a stop when it's primed , although you can still turn it with a screw driver so it's not binding on the cover . The drill is an old chepie halfrauds job and i can stop it with my hand so am i being overly cautious ?
 
so come on guys any one gonna put their reputation on the line and give me some idea if i'm on the right track ? I charged the drill battery right up and it spins the pump o.k , seems to be working very hard though . How long can you spin the pump with it primed up before it makes the drill work really hard ? I'm not sure if i have it right . may even be right . Don't want to strip it apart again if what i'm getting is normal .

Turn the ignition on and get somebody to watch the oil light. When it goes out you're there!
 
Your missing my point Rich . I know i have oil pressure , I can hear it and feel it on the drill . I'm concerned i may have too much . Don't want to risk stripping the drive cogs on the dizzy when i run it .

If you haven't altered the pressure relief valve, and it wasn't stuck beforehand, then fitting the high volume kit won't make any difference. The kit increases the volume, not the pressure.
