Engine removal without removing auto box

Think I may have asked this before but after much stalling etc, finally about to take the engine out, seeing as I've time on my hands due to lockdown....

Crane and engine stand standing by. Question is, is it possible/easy to take the engine out without the auto gearbox?

Ex mechanic mate of mine reckons I just need to whip the starter off and access the bolts via the torque convertor? Job done?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Steve, done it many a times, engine out and back in without removing the gearbox, I didn't need to remove the starter motor as cant see how that gains access to the four bolts holding the torque converter to the auto flywheel. You access them by removing the half moon shaped dust cover plate that sits on the bottom half of the bell housing and rotate the engine to gain access to each bolt, jam the engine on the starter motor ring teeth against the bell housing casing and they should undo easily , use breaker bar if required. I'd do this first before I start the engine out process, make sure the torque converter doesn't slide out the end of the auto box otherwise AFT fluid will pour out. Also tie the box up the car to keep it from dropping down and damaging linkages ect.
Hope this helps! Damian.
