Engine oil for P6B

A while ago I did a used oil analysis, which somebody might find interesting. Despite the warning all seems well - no noisy tappets since I replaced the shafts and rockers, oil pressure OK (30psi from 1500rpm), going very well indeed. Penrite 20-60 changed annually.

I can second Penrite oil HPR30 20W60 as being good for the Rover V8. My 4.6 litre engine since installation in 2007 has covered some 236,200 miles (380,282 km). Oil pressure at running tempeature at idle (600 rpm) is a touch over 30 psi. No gritty deposits within the rocker covers or the flame traps, just clean and mostly still silver.

Hi Gerald,

The oil change range is typically 2000 to 4000 miles. Time wise, it rarely exceeds 6 months.

Dropping your engine oil every 6 months is a good habit to have. As you say, even if you only cover a short distance, the oil still suffers contamination.

Ron.

So Im not anal. Was told many years ago by an agent for caltex - "change your oil every six months no matter how little milage youve done"
Just an aside both supercheap and repco here in NZ are 50% off retail at the moment.ie $45 for Penrite 5ltr 20w60

I'll put my 10 cents in here... I asked my mechanic friend, who does my engine work if required, about oil change intervals. His response was that it depends on how the cars are driven. If you primarily potter around town you'll end up having a lot more water condensing into the oil which causes it to degrades. (Water is a by-product of the combustion process and will get absorbed from the atmosphere when sitting around ) However if your more into going for a decent drive, over an hour at a time, the oil will get good and hot with plenty of time to evaporate the water content from the oil and expel it from the engine block cavities. (I suspect a jolly brisk dive will also slosh the settled contaminants from the sump and put them into the filter as part of the engine oil cycle) The deciding time to change the oil is when it starts to go dark, that's the sigh of contaminates or when your milage service recommendations are reached. . Personally some of my classics may only do 50ks a year, sending that time in a dry garage. So even yearly oil changes can be a waist of money and resources. I'm not saying the way I do things is for every one, its just the way I role and has worked for me for decades.
